target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/dandavidprize.org\/the-prize\/\">Dan David Prize<\/a>, then a $1 million award honoring laureates \u201cwho made outstanding contributions to humanity.\u201d In one email chain published by Paul\u2019s office, Dinarello alerted Fauci that \u201cit\u2019s submitted\u201d and personally thanked him and his chief of staff, Greg Folkers, for \u201cdoing most of the work\u201d with drafting the Dan David Prize submission.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" million in NIAID grant money<\/a> after he helped Fauci win the Dan David Prize.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEach year the Dan David Prize committee asks me for nominees,\u201d Dinarello wrote in the submission notification to Fauci\u2019s staff, noting that he is \u201con a lot of Israeli lists\u201d as <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.weizmann.ac.il\/board\/members\">a lifetime board member<\/a> at the Weizmann Institute of Science, an Israel-based research center. The award itself is <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/dandavidprize.org\/faq-page\/\">headquartered<\/a> at Tel Aviv University, where the prize\u2019s namesake, Israeli philanthropist Dan David, was a top donor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the lead-up to the submission deadline, Dinarello urged Folkers, \u201cPlease let me read the draft of the narrative.\u201d Dinarello also advised that Folkers should \u201cemphasize\u201d <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nih.gov\/news-events\/news-releases\/statement-nih-barda-fda-emergency-use-authorization-moderna-covid-19-vaccine\">NIAID\u2019s co-development<\/a> of the second mRNA vaccine for COVID-19. \u201cIt should be in the long narrative (He is writing this),\u201d Dinarello said of Fauci.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-17\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-3\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNeed to beef up the covid part,\u201d Folkers instructed other NIAID staffers the following day. Folkers attached a Word document containing the prepared nomination letter and asked, \u201cDo u have language in the can [\u2026] that u could share that delineates how we responded in many ways to covid? He would have to write the nomination as he has done in the past.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-26\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-5\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This dynamic played out between Fauci and other academics before the pandemic.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2018, Fauci repeatedly requested that Dr. Barton Haynes enter him in several prize contests and workshopped which ones he would be best suited for.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the time, Haynes had nominated Fauci for the 2019 Shaw Prize in Life Science and Medicine, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.shawprize.org\/en\/prizes-laureates\/life-science-and-medicine\">a gold-plated Chinese medal<\/a> made of 18-karat solid gold that is considered the \u201cNobel of the East.\u201d It is unclear if Haynes put Fauci\u2019s name forward at his behest, but the emails suggested some coordination between them.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHere you go!\u201d Haynes wrote, forwarding a confirmation receipt of his Shaw Prize submission. \u201cThanks, Bart,\u201d replied Fauci. \u201cThere is another one that looks possible for me. As usual, I will supply all of the material. Fauci indicated that his team would handle the submission paperwork for the Heinz Award, which pays out a cash prize of $250,000. All Haynes had to do was send his resume to the prize committee to become \u201ca nominator\u201d in the awards process.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe obviously will take care of all of that on my end,\u201d Fauci wrote. \u201cThe only minor glitch is that in order to nominate me you need to write to them, send your CV and indicate that you want to serve as a nominator. (U.S. Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2020, Haynes also asked Fauci whether he should nominate him for the Shaw Prize again. \u201cHave you won this yet?\u201d Haynes wrote. \u201cWant me to nominate you?\u201d Fauci said he did not want the nomination.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fauci has never won the Heinz Award or the Shaw Prize.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Haynes, the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/immunobiology.duke.edu\/profile\/barton-ford-haynes\">director<\/a> of Duke University\u2019s Human Vaccine Institute, was awarded over <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/reporter.nih.gov\/search\/ka80KDIWnUa-66g95vghdg\/projects\">$282 million in NIAID research funds<\/a> as the project lead on various vaccine development programs after nominating Fauci for the Shaw Prize in 2018.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dinarello and Haynes, both longtime recipients of federal research grants, had regularly received research funding from NIAID prior to their prize submissions on Fauci\u2019s behalf. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to the agency\u2019s grant repository, NIAID gave Dinarello <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/reporter.nih.gov\/search\/f4ZByM0QLUiltfQuF_qYjg\/projects\">a total of $12.2 million<\/a> to support his research as the principal investigator on a series of immunology-related studies that date back to 1985. Haynes, meanwhile, has been awarded <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/reporter.nih.gov\/search\/YTB8KSvDmEmPcwXJpINUJw\/projects\">more than $698 million<\/a> in grant money since 1987 by NIAID. A professor of medicine at Duke, Haynes <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/corporate.dukehealth.org\/news\/duke-professor-lead-300-million-nih-center-hiv-vaccine-research\">led<\/a> the university\u2019s Center for HIV\/AIDS Vaccine Immunology, a consortium established by NIAID.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The records do not show Fauci outright offering Haynes or Dinarello additional NIAID funding in exchange for the prize submissions, but Paul argued the trading of nominations among scientists raises conflict-of-interest concerns.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fauci, Haynes, and Dinarello did not respond to requests for comment.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-large is-resized\">Sen.
