The lawsuit alleges that The Times and its reporters engaged in malicious defamation against trump, his family, and the MAGA movement through reporting on the 2024 election and a related book. Trump\u2019s legal team was given until August 27 to submit an amended complaint with more detailed allegations. The case is being heard in the U.S. district Court for the Middle District of Florida, where Merryday has previously instructed Trump to draft a more straightforward complaint. Merryday was nominated by President George H.W. Bush.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Monday\u2019s ruling is not the first time the judge has given Trump an opportunity to amend the lawsuit. Shortly after Trump initially<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/3809033\/trump-sue-new-york-times-for-defamation\/\"> filed the 85-page lawsuit<\/a> in September, Merryday struck down the complaint but gave the president\u2019s legal team <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/justice\/3815884\/judge-strikes-trump-new-york-times-lawsuit-ordering-it-be-rewritten\/\">28 days to file an amended version<\/a> of the complaint. At the time, he ordered Trump to refile a lawsuit with \u201csimple, concise, and direct\u201d claims, writing that \u201ca complaint is not a public forum for vituperation and invective \u2014 not a protected platform to rage against an adversary.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The lawsuit targets the <em>New York Times\u2019s<\/em> reporting on the 2024 election and a book published by several of its journalists, accusing it of becoming a \u201cmouthpiece\u201d for the Democratic Party and engaging in a \u201cdecades-long pattern\u201d of \u201cintentional and malicious defamation against\u201d the president. The Times stands by our journalism, and the President\u2019s legal pleadings will not change that or deter further reporting. We will continue to defend our reporters\u2019 constitutionally protected rights \u2013 and the public\u2019s right to know \u2013 and are confident in the laws that underpin them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is not the only lawsuit Trump has brought against major media outlets, accusing them of malicious reporting and spreading lies. He is suing the BBC for $10 billion over how it edited his Jan. 6, 2021, speech, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/3881065\/trump-1-billion-lawsuit-bbc-future-of-broadcasters-license-fee-brought-into-question\/\">triggering the resignations<\/a> of two of the BBC\u2019s top executives.
