Vaughn was charged in connection with a 2021 protest at an abortion clinic and convicted in 2024 of felony conspiracy and FACE Act violations. He was arrested by the FBI in front of his family, which he and his lawyers described as a traumatic experience. The settlement, announced by the Thomas More Society, resolved Vaughn’s claims against the government with an unspecified seven-figure amount, acknowledging that federal authorities overstepped.Vaughn expressed relief, thanking President Trump for his pardon and vowing to continue advocating for the vulnerable. The case highlights concerns over the use of federal law enforcement against peaceful pro-life activists, especially following changes in DOJ guidance limiting such prosecutions during the Biden era. His arrest by armed FBI agents in front of his family fueled criticism from conservatives who said the Biden administration had selectively targeted anti-abortion activists. Under the policy, such cases generally require “extraordinary circumstances” or significant aggravating factors, including death, serious bodily harm, or serious property damage.

The Biden DOJ brought FACE Act cases against dozens of anti-abortion activists after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v.
