None of the harm he caused, and none of the ignorance he inflicted on the country, could have prospered without a cultural army of mindless slogan-repeaters and narrative enforcement commissars. Every habit in media, academia, politics, and deep blue social engagement that gave us Saint Anthony Fauci, the all-knowing savior figure who couldn\u2019t be questioned or doubted, is alive and well. The \u201cIn Fauci We Trust\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/camaelshirt.com\/shirt\/in-doctor-fauci-we-trust-political-yard-sign\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lawn sign<\/a> and the deeply sick <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B086G7DGV4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Saint Fauci devotional candle<\/a> come from somewhere, and we haven\u2019t defeated any of it. We\u2019ve changed nothing at all.<\/p>\n<p>At Politico in May of 2020, the conservative pundit Rich Lowry wrote under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2020\/05\/13\/fauci-is-not-the-villain-257008\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dismissive headline<\/a>, \u201cFauci is not the villain.\u201d His argument was <em>categorical<\/em>: Fauci, he wrote, didn\u2019t merit personal attacks, because he was \u201csimply an epidemiologist, one who brings considerable expertise and experience to the table.\u201d We see now what Fauci was thinking about during the pandemic, and none of it had to do with science, evidence, and expertise. He was thinking about his fame and his power. He was thinking about <em>Anthony Fauci<\/em>, with a remarkable lack of intellectual curiosity and a total absence of honesty. But it was improper to question him, because he\u2019s an <em>epidemiologist<\/em>, and you can\u2019t question those. <\/p>\n<p>First, yes you can.<\/p>\n<p>Second, <a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC9795384\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">he wasn\u2019t<\/a>. A doctor who didn\u2019t treat patients after his internal medicine residency, and an administrator who controlled funding for scientists in laboratories but after a few years didn\u2019t run one himself, Fauci wore epidemiology <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/iowahawkblog\/status\/664089892599631872?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">as a skinsuit<\/a>. The claim that his professional expertise couldn\u2019t be questioned was never based upon his professional expertise, which he didn\u2019t have. He wasn\u2019t a scientist. In 2020, he wasn\u2019t a lab guy. He was an office guy. He decided who got checks from the government.<\/p>\n<p>In short, the credentialist argument wasn\u2019t an <em>argument<\/em>. It didn\u2019t pursue and analyze emerging forms of evidence. Instead, the claim for Fauci\u2019s title and presumptive expertise was intended as a barrier and a deflection. It was a conversation-ender. It was a \u201cyou can\u2019t.\u201d Could the virus be less fatal than the World Health Organization <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2020\/03\/03\/who-says-coronavirus-death-rate-is-3point4percent-globally-higher-than-previously-thought.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">says<\/a>? You can\u2019t ask that. You don\u2019t have the <em>credentials<\/em>. The conversation wasn\u2019t about the thing itself; the conversation was about status and titles, so the conversation was an impediment. The \u201cTrust Me I\u2019m an Epidemiologist\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/dp\/B0F27VDHFW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">t-shirt<\/a> wasn\u2019t a sly joke; they meant it that way. Silence, peasant.<\/p>\n<p>The big tell: The Great Barrington Declaration was <a href=\"https:\/\/gbdeclaration.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">written and signed<\/a> by eminent epidemiologists from major research universities, but it instantly became a bizarre fringe document in the media. You can\u2019t question Dr. Anthony Fauci, because he\u2019s an expert, but Dr. Jay Bhattacharya, Dr. Sunetra Gupta, and Dr. Martin Kulldorff have no contribution to make and should be dismissed as marginal figures. Credentialism is infinitely flexible, functioning on the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.logicallyfallacious.com\/logicalfallacies\/No-True-Scotsman\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">No True Scotsman<\/a>\u201d fallacy: All true experts agree with me, so anyone who doesn\u2019t agree with me isn\u2019t an expert.<\/p>\n<p>Fauci was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/david-harsanyi-bidens-putin-appeasement-has-been-years-in-the-making\/\" title=\"David Harsanyi: Biden\u2019s Putin Appeasement Has Been Years in the Making\">relentlessly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/fire-fauci-new-study-finds-closing-schools-in-response-to-covid-19-delayed-herd-immunity-and-will-increase-overall-deaths\/\" title=\"FIRE ...: New Study Finds Closing Schools In Response to ... Delayed Herd Immunity and Will Increase Overall Deaths\">wrong<\/a><\/a>, uniformly harmful, and not at all guided by science, but he was the unquestionable personal embodiment of science, so he <em>couldn\u2019t<\/em> be wrong. <\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<div lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p>Lawmakers like Sens. Rand Paul and Ted Cruz have called for Dr. Fauci to step down and be prosecuted over the course of COVID-19. Fauci scoffs at such threats, calling it &#8220;noise.&#8221; <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;They&#8217;re really criticizing science because I represent science.
