Rand Paul, R-Ky., recently released former Covid czar <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/anthony-fauci\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Anthony Fauci<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.paul.senate.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/2026.07.24_Tonys-Diary-Package.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">diary entries<\/a> surrounding his horrific handling of the viral outbreak, and boy is it a doozy. From <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/07\/27\/6-years-later-faucis-diary-confirms-the-federalist-was-right-about-everything\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">proving<\/a> the accuracy of The Federalist\u2019s Covid reporting to <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/07\/27\/if-you-thought-anthony-fauci-was-an-egomaniac-wait-until-you-read-his-covid-diary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reaffirming<\/a> that Fauci has an obsession with \u2026 well, Fauci \u2026 the records further underscore how government officials lied to the public in the name of power and prestige.<\/p>\n<p>That final point is especially true for Fauci, who, the documents show, parroted several falsehoods throughout the pandemic.<\/p>\n<h2>Covid Fatality<\/h2>\n<p>When the Covid outbreak became widespread, power-hungry government officials treated it as the second coming of the bubonic plague as a pretext to lockdown society. Yet the virus\u2019 risks to the general population were not nearly as deadly as what they were made out to be \u2014 a fact Fauci recognized early on.<\/p>\n<p>In an entry dated Feb. 8, 2020, Fauci <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/exposed-fauci-diary-shows-estimated-covid-19-death-rate-much-lower-told-congress\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">described<\/a> a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/report-dem-at-top-of-cuomos-line-of-succession-preparing-should-he-resign\/\" title=\"Report: Dem At Top Of Cuomo\u2019s Line Of Succession Preparing Should He Resign\">purported phone call<\/a> he had with Tom Frieden, who served as President Obama\u2019s Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) director. According to Fauci, the two discussed \u201cvarious aspects of the [Covid] outbreak.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The then-National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) director wrote that he and Frieden \u201care on the same page\u201d in their assessment that the Covid-19 virus \u201cis acting like a bad influenza in its transmissibility and that the denominator\u201d of total diagnosed cases \u201cis much greater than\u201d currently reported figures. Fauci further noted that this would make the \u201ccase fatality rate (CFR)\u201d \u2014 the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/case-fatality-rate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">proportion<\/a> of people who die from a disease among the total number infected over a certain period of time \u2014 \u201cmore like 0.2-0.3 % rather than 2.0%.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Put another way, the risk of dying from Covid among the general population is not as great as initially feared. <\/p>\n<p>Yet that\u2019s not the tune that Fauci sang to the public in the weeks to come.<\/p>\n<p>During a March 10, 2020, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/transcript\/dr-fauci-tells-hannity-that-trump-administrations-coronavirus-travel-ban-saved-us-concern-and-suffering\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Hannity<\/em> appearance<\/a>, Fauci said that the \u201cmortality for seasonal flu is 0.1,\u201d and that the mortality for Covid-19 \u201cis about 2, 2.5 percent.\u201d While he subsequently noted that \u201c[i]t\u2019s probably lower than that\u201d and \u201cprobably closer to 1 [percent],\u201d he then stated, \u201cBut even if it\u2019s 1, it\u2019s ten times more lethal than the seasonal flu. You got to make sure that people understand that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Fauci would regurgitate similar rhetoric when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/116\/chrg\/CHRG-116hhrg40428\/CHRG-116hhrg40428.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">testifying<\/a> before Congress the following day. Under questioning from Rep. Michael Cloud, R-Texas, the then-NIAID director said that \u201cthe seasonal flu that we deal with every year has a mortality of 0.1 percent,\u201d and that \u201c[t]he stated mortality over all of this when you look at all the data including China is about three percent. It first started off as two and now three.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think if you count all the cases of minimally symptomatic or asymptomatic infection, that probably brings the mortality rate down to somewhere around one percent, which means it is 10 times more lethal than the seasonal flu. I think that is something that people can get their arms around and understand,\u201d Fauci said. <\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<div lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p>\ud83d\udea8Fauci&#8217;s diary says he privately put COVID&#8217;s fatality rate at 0.2-0.3%. Under oath weeks later, he told Congress it was 10x the flu. The timeline:<\/p>\n<p>Feb 8, 2020 (private diary): case fatality rate &#8220;more like 0.2-0.3%.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>March 10 (Hannity): &#8220;The mortality for this is about 2-2.5%.\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/FVoAYZhQ6J\">pic.twitter.com\/FVoAYZhQ6J<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u2014 KanekoaTheGreat (@KanekoaTheGreat) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/KanekoaTheGreat\/status\/2081443164578328604?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 26, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span> <\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<h2>Lab Leak Theory<\/h2>\n<p>Fauci was notorious for <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/02\/28\/fauci-and-ecohealths-peter-daszak-silenced-lab-leak-conspiracy-theory-congress-shouldnt-let-them-forget-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pouring<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/07\/27\/fauci-toadies-privately-called-lab-leak-theory-highly-likely-while-publicly-shutting-it-down\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">cold water<\/a> on the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/lab-leak-theory\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">theory<\/a> that the Covid-19 outbreak came as the result of a leak from the Wuhan Institute of Virology in China. But the newly released diary entries show Fauci himself acknowledged early on that the theory of the virus resulting from a Wuhan wet market \u2014 which he later <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/1447438\/fauci-pushes-wet-market-hypothesis-on-covid-19-origins\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">appeared<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/news\/2020\/apr\/3\/anthony-fauci-world-should-pressure-china-close-we\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">to<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/fauci-throws-cold-water-conspiracy-theory-coronavirus-escaped-chinese-lab-2020-4\">parr<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/fauci-throws-cold-water-conspiracy-theory-coronavirus-escaped-chinese-lab-2020-4\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ot<\/a> as the likely explanation, along with many others \u2014 lacked substantiation.<\/p>\n<p>In a Jan. 26, 2020, entry, Fauci noted that recent \u201cepi data and genomic data\u201d indicated that \u201cthe first infection was in early December and was not connected to the market.\u201d He went on to recall how the Chinese government had claimed \u201cthat there is no human to human transmission and all the original 27 cases were from the market.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Now we know the market was not the source, it was the amplifier<\/em>. Having said that, somewhere the virus jumped from animals to humans,\u201d Fauci wrote (emphasis added). <\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<div lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p>2\/9 Jan. 26, 2020. Fauci writes in his diary: &#8220;Now we know the market was not the source, it was the amplifier.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That is January of 2020. The wet market was already off the table in his own private notes. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/mz0OzcPHgg\">pic.twitter.com\/mz0OzcPHgg<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u2014 Senator Rand Paul (@SenRandPaul) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/SenRandPaul\/status\/2081093794028519738?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 25, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span> <\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<h2>School Closures<\/h2>\n<p>Fauci <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/KanekoaTheGreat\/status\/2081494432239714525?s=20\">has<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/fee.org\/articles\/fauci-claims-he-had-nothing-to-do-with-school-closures-his-own-statements-suggest-otherwise\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claimed<\/a> in the Covid lockdowns\u2019 aftermath that he had nothing to do with state and local governments closing their schools over the virus \u2014 an unscientific policy decision that caused <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/03\/05\/another-study-shows-how-covid-learning-losses-are-still-hurting-students\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">incredible harm<\/a> to America\u2019s children. But that\u2019s not what his diary shows.<\/p>\n<p>In a March 15, 2020, entry, Fauci is seen bragging about convincing Democrat officials like California Gov. Gavin Newsom and then-New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio to close their schools over the virus. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI spoke with Bill de Blasio (Mayor \u2013 NYC) and convinced him based on what I was saying publicly and my conversation tonight to close the NYC schools (he had already decided based on what I was saying on TV). I went on to tell him he should close the bars and restaurants in NYC,\u201d Fauci wrote. \u201cHe said that he would base this on my recommendation. I had a similar call with Ann O\u2019Leary, the COS of Gov. Gavin Newsom of California. Ann said that based on my TV appearances today and yesterday, the Governor has decided to close the schools in California as well as the bars and restaurants.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<div lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p>Fauci&#8217;s diary, March 15, 2020: I convinced NYC Mayor &#038; Cali Governor to close schools, bars, and restaurants.<\/p>\n<p>Fauci, July 26, 2022: &#8220;First of all, I didn&#8217;t recommend locking anything down.&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ATOjAka6ch\">pic.twitter.com\/ATOjAka6ch<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u2014 KanekoaTheGreat (@KanekoaTheGreat) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/KanekoaTheGreat\/status\/2081494432239714525?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 26, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span> <\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<h2>Covid Vaccines<\/h2>\n<p>In October 2021, Fauci was on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/transcript-dr-anthony-fauci-on-face-the-nation-october-3-2021\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">national television<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newschannel5.com\/news\/dr-fauci-says-too-soon-to-tell-whether-americans-should-avoid-gathering-for-christmas\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">telling<\/a> audiences that the best ways for the country \u201cto get those [new Covid] cases down\u201d was for \u201cpeople [to get] vaccinated\u201d and follow CDC guidance advising people to avoid large gatherings. The implication, as it seems, was that Covid vaccination was an effective way to help stop the virus\u2019 spread. <\/p>\n<p>And yet, the health official wrote in his diary a month later about his worry that he would contract Covid after attending a large gathering where vaccination was reportedly required to attend. <\/p>\n<p>In a Nov. 17, 2021, entry, Fauci detailed attending a \u201cbook party\u201d for ABC News hack <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/jonathan-karl\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jonathan Karl<\/a>\u2018s new Trump book the night prior. In self-aggrandizing fashion, he bemoaned having to remove his mask for \u201c2\/3 of the time\u201d to take photos and greet his adoring fans and said that they \u201ctreat[ed] [him]  like Elvis Presley.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>It was after this party that the vaccinated Fauci detailed his anxiousness about catching Covid after being at such a large gathering.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I went home that night I was nervous all night looking at the ceiling concerned about having gotten infected in that very crowded restaurant despite the fact that vaccination proof was required to get in. I\u2019m well aware that many people who are vaccinated are still getting infected and that worried me a lot,\u201d Fauci wrote. \u201cI\u2019m supposed to go to an even bigger black tie affair at the home of the French ambassador tomorrow. I think I am going to cancel out since I don\u2019t want to go through the nerve-wracking experience that I did last night worrying about having gotten infected.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Gain of Function Research<\/h2>\n<p>While speaking before Congress in spring 2021, Fauci <a href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/117\/meeting\/house\/114270\/documents\/HHRG-117-GO24-20211201-SD004.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reportedly<\/a> told lawmakers that the National Institutes of Health \u2014 which NIAID is part of \u2014 \u201chas not ever and does not now fund gain-of-function research in the Wuhan Institute of Virology.\u201d As Federalist Senior Contributor Helen Raleigh\u00a0previously <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2023\/02\/28\/fauci-and-ecohealths-peter-daszak-silenced-lab-leak-conspiracy-theory-congress-shouldnt-let-them-forget-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>, however,\u00a0the nongovernmental organization <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/tag\/ecohealth-alliance\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">EcoHealth Alliance<\/a> sent \u201cmore than half a million dollars\u2019 worth of U.S. government grants [from 2014-2020], including those from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) with Anthony Fauci\u2019s approval, to the Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV) to conduct gain-of-function research on bat coronaviruses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite his denials, Fauci seemed to acknowledge in his diary that gain-of-function research was taking place in Wuhan. In what appears to be a summary of a Feb. 1, 2020, conference call with U.S. and foreign government health officials, Fauci noted that \u201cDr. Zheng-Li Shi at the University of Wuhan has been working for years in [gain-of-function] GOF in coronaviruses to allow adaptation of the spike protein to bind to the human ACE2 receptor. \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>      Shawn Fleetwood is a staff writer for The Federalist and a graduate of the University of Mary Washington.
