Sabato’s Crystal Ball analysis indicates that the current electoral map favors Democrats similarly or even slightly more than the 2018 map, wich was a disastrous year for Republicans, resulting in them losing control of the House. Metrics show that the median district supporting Trump is now only slightly less favorable compared to the national vote, suggesting a potential Democratic advantage. Even though complex political shifts complicate direct comparisons, these indicators point toward a likely Democratic victory.

Additionally, Republican enthusiasm among high-propensity voters is waning, heavily influenced by economic concerns like inflation, with about one in five reliable Republican voters potentially staying home or voting Democrat. In contrast, democratic enthusiasm remains steady, raising the prospect of Democratic gains in the upcoming elections. Younger men under 40 are identified as a critical voter group, having played a vital role in Trump’s recent reelection bid. Several variables, including candidate positioning adn party finances, could alter this outlook as the election approaches in approximately 100 days.

With low enthusiasm among Republicans, the 2026 midterm election map is looking worrisome for Republicans even after favorable redistricting, with Sabato’s Crystal Ball election tracking putting the current odds at 2018 levels.

President Donald Trump’s last midterm elections were in 2018, when Republicans suffered blistering losses that cost them the government trifecta, losing the House to the Democrats.
