This approach aims to portray Democrats as out of touch with rural America by emphasizing their association with veganism, which remains a small minority in the U.S. (about 1% identify as vegan and 4% as vegetarian). High-profile targets include Texas Democrat James Talarico, who has been mocked as a vegan despite denying the claim, and others like Manny Rutinel in Colorado. Democrats who are openly vegan or have promoted plant-based diets are also part of this narrative. However, experts note that these attacks are ofen part of broader efforts to depict Democratic candidates as outside the mainstream or ‘weird,’ rather than focusing purely on diet. Some within the Republican camp question the effectiveness of mocking candidates over dietary choices, especially as there is a growing health-focused conservative movement. Meanwhile, many voters and farmers care more about economic issues such as tariffs and agricultural policy than candidates’ eating habits, suggesting that these vegan-related attacks may have limited impact on election outcomes.

Republicans have found an unlikely new line of attack against Democratic candidates: branding them as vegans.

Veganism, a diet that excludes all animal products, including meat, dairy, and eggs, has become an unexpected political flashpoint as Republicans seek to portray Democrats as culturally out of touch with rural America and agricultural communities.

Recommended Stories

Republicans make veganism the latest campaign flash point

Missouri congressional candidate accused of funneling $165,000 from terminated state campaign

Sanders rebukes Rahm Emanuel and establishment Democrats: ‘Status quo is not working’

In Texas, President Donald Trump and Attorney General Ken Paxton’s Senate campaign have repeatedly sought to portray Democratic nominee James Talarico as a vegan, despite Talarico insisting he isn’t.
