And suddenly the governor is out front saying, \u2018We just discovered this computer glitch.\u2019 I have a healthy skepticism as to whether it was a computer glitch. The computer company is indicating, \u2018No, not us.&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">State Sen. Michael Testa (R-NJ) said lawmakers deserve to know whether Murphy was informed about the problem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI would want to know: Did Gov. Murphy know anything at any point in time, and when did he know it, if at all?\u201d <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/07\/23\/voter-registration-mistake-chills-relationship-between-mikie-sherrill-and-democratic-predecessor-01008370?utm_source=dlvr.it&#038;utm_medium=twitter\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/07\/23\/voter-registration-mistake-chills-relationship-between-mikie-sherrill-and-democratic-predecessor-01008370?utm_source=dlvr.it&#038;utm_medium=twitter\">Testa told <em>Politico<\/em><\/a>. \u201cWhat I found to be really unfortunate about all this is how dismissive so many people in the Democrat Party were of this even being a possibility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Assembly Republican Leader John DiMaio renewed calls for a full audit of New Jersey\u2019s voter rolls, saying Republicans had warned for years that the state\u2019s automatic voter registration system lacked sufficient safeguards.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cNew Jersey Republicans have been sounding the alarm for years that the automatic voter registration process at the MVC was highly problematic,\u201d DiMaio said in a written statement to the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cTrenton Democrats have continued to undermine public trust in our elections, and it\u2019s time for change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republican strategist Mike Hahn argued that the two-year delay in informing the public has become the central issue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf New Jersey Democrats want to talk about transparency, they can start by explaining why it took two years for the public to hear about thousands of ineligible voters on the rolls,\u201d Hahn told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He called on Sherrill to release \u201cevery email, every briefing, and every name of who knew what and when,\u201d adding that \u201canything less is just her trying to cover up for the corrupt Phil Murphy administration.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Hahn also argued the federal SAVE America Act, which would require documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections, \u201cwould stop all of this,\u201d while claiming the 6,600 registrations were \u201cjust the tip of the iceberg in New Jersey.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sherrill\u2019s office rejected Republicans\u2019 allegations, arguing they were using the incident to advance wider efforts to restrict voting rather than address election security.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cLet\u2019s be clear, nothing that MAGA Republicans are arguing has anything to do with making elections more secure, and everything to do with voter suppression,\u201d Steve Sigmund, a spokesman for Sherrill, told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cGovernor Sherrill, on the other hand, is ensuring New Jersey runs secure elections where every eligible citizen can exercise their right to vote.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sigmund said the registration error occurred \u201cunder the previous administration \u2014 nearly three years before Governor Sherrill took office\u201d and said she \u201cimmediately launched an independent investigation and took action to remove ineligible voters from the rolls.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The controversy comes at a politically sensitive moment, with President <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"4\">Donald Trump<\/a> making election integrity and proof-of-citizenship requirements a centerpiece of his administration. Although the roughly 400 improperly cast ballots represent a tiny fraction of New Jersey\u2019s electorate, Republicans argue the incident highlights vulnerabilities in the state\u2019s voter registration system.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Democrats rejected claims that the incident reflected widespread voter fraud, noting that the mistake had been corrected.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt should have never happened.
