The Becket Law Firm, representing groups such as the Carmelite sisters, Little Sisters of the Poor, and other religious orders, has filed suit to block the law before its August 5 implementation. They argue that the law compels them to facilitate or even inform patients about assisted suicide, which conflicts with their religious beliefs prohibiting the promotion or assistance of self-harm. <\/p>\n<p>The law allows terminally ill individuals to request medication to end their lives peacefully, but the religious groups contend they cannot prescribe or assist in obtaining such drugs. They also claim that the law&#8217;s requirements could force healthcare providers to violate their faith or face penalties like fines, license revocations, or imprisonment. The lawsuit emphasizes that New York&#8217;s law is broader than similar laws in other states and jurisdictions, which do not require doctors to discuss or promote assisted suicide.<\/p>\n<p>Governor Kathy Hochul signed the law in Febuary, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/marjorie-taylor-greene-breaks-ranks-with-gop-now-radioactive\/\" title=\"Marjorie Taylor Greene breaks ranks with GOP, now \u2018radioactive\u2019\">citing personal reasons related<\/a> to her mother&#8217;s suffering from ALS. The group is asking a federal court to block the law before it goes into effect Aug. 5.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/justthenews.com\/nation\/religion\/nuns-sue-new-york-requiring-them--benefits-suicide-patients-doj-watches\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Just The News<\/a> said the groups represented in the suit are numerous: Carmelite Sisters for the Aged and Infirm, Little Sisters of the Poor, the Dominican Sisters of Hawthorne, Missionary Sisters of St. Benedict, Diocese of Rockville Centre and its Bishop John Barres, and other orders.<\/p>\n<p>The outlet noted the law in question is the New York Medical Aid in Dying Act.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.medicalaidindyingny.org\/the-bill\/summary\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">short description<\/a> of the law describes it as a way for \u201ca terminally ill, mentally capable adult with a prognosis of 6 months or less to live to have the option to request, obtain and decide to ingest medication to die peacefully in their sleep if suffering is unbearable.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Becket said the groups it represents cannot prescribe suicide drugs in accordance with their faith, nor can they direct patients in how to obtain them or facilitate a suicide in any way. Becket argued the law will require them to do so.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBeginning August 5, any healthcare provider who declines to prescribe suicide pills could still have to tell terminally ill patients about their \u2018right\u2019 to kill themselves, help them meet the requirements for obtaining suicide pills, and direct them to a provider willing to prescribe the lethal drugs. Refusal invites significant fines, license revocation, or even time behind bars.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFederal law forbids New York from discriminating against healthcare providers who object to assisted suicide, but New York has done so anyway,\u201d the group said in its news release.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/becketnewsite.s3.amazonaws.com\/20260717162615\/Carmelite-Sisters-for-the-Aged-and-Infirm-v.-James-Complaint.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lawsuit<\/a> argued, \u201cThis \u2018Suicide Counseling Mandate\u2019 is far broader than anything required by states like California, Oregon, and Washington. And jurisdictions such as New Zealand and Victoria, Australia, which have also legalized assisted suicide, expressly forbid doctors from raising assisted suicide with their patients.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYet New York will soon require it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>New York Democratic Gov. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.governor.ny.gov\/news\/governor-hochul-signs-medical-aid-dying-act-new-york-state-law\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kathy Hochul<\/a> signed the bill into law in February, citing her mother\u2019s struggle with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis as part of her reason for supporting it. \u201cThis journey was deeply personal for me.
