The office&#8217;s location at Sabathani Community Center,a nonprofit serving the Somali community,has drawn scrutiny amid allegations that Omar&#8217;s associates donated money linked to the fraud ring,which involved stealing $7.2 million through a fake meal delivery operation that billed the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/doj-announces-charges-47-in-alleged-250-million-feeding-our-future-covid-fraud-scheme\/\" title=\"DOJ Announces Charges 47 in Alleged 0 Million &quot;... Omar&#8217;s office and her campaign have been scrutinized for not handing over communications related to Bock, the convicted leader of the fraud ring. Additionally,Omar promoted the MEALS Act,which eased eligibility rules for food distributors during the COVID-19 pandemic,potentially enabling fraudulent enrollment of phantom entities. Omar&#8217;s relationships with the community center include paying over $46,700 in rent since relocating her office there in 2023 and participating in community events. While her office and the center have not been accused of wrongdoing, the investigation raises questions about her connections to individuals involved in the widespread fraud scheme and her promotion class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Omar\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/omar.house.gov\/contact\/offices\/minneapolis-district-office\">office in Minneapolis<\/a> is currently co-located within the Sabathani Community Center, a black-led nonprofit organization that provides <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/sabathani.org\/about-us\/\">\u201cculturally tailored services.\u201d<\/a> In 2022, \u201cout of an abundance of caution,\u201d Omar donated <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fec.gov\/data\/receipts\/individual-contributions\/?committee_id=C00680934&#038;contributor_name=Ahmed%2C+Abdihakim&#038;contributor_name=Ghedi%2C+Ahmed\">a total of $5,400<\/a> divided among three Minneapolis food pantries \u2014 including Sabathani, which runs <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/sabathani.org\/food-distribution\/\">a food distribution center<\/a> \u2014 after the congresswoman received campaign contributions matching that amount one year prior from a pair of Minnesota, many of them shell companies created by Somali immigrants, that fraudulently billed a federal child nutrition program for the cost of meals never actually served.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-1\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-1\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-15\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-1\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ghedi and Amed, alongside other co-conspirators, operated a fake meal-delivery site out of <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.startribune.com\/business-owners-customers-rejoice-now-that-st-paul-area-mall-has-reopened-after-shutdown\/565452792\">a Somali deli<\/a> under the sponsorship of Feeding Our Future. Together, they stole $7.2 million in child nutrition money meant to feed underprivileged children based on bogus reimbursement claims submitted between September 2020 and September 2021.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/investigations\/4531046\/somali-fugitive-minnesota-fraud-charges-ilhan-omar-donor\/\"><strong>SOMALI FUGITIVE FLEEING MINNESOTA FRAUD CHARGES IS AN ILHAN OMAR DONOR<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During that time, Ghedi and Amed donated <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/docquery.fec.gov\/cgi-bin\/fecimg\/?202104159443545419\">$2,700<\/a> <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/docquery.fec.gov\/cgi-bin\/fecimg\/?202104159443545424\">each<\/a> to Omar\u2019s reelection campaign in February and March 2021, respectively. Omar then <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/sahanjournal.com\/democracy-politics\/feeding-our-future-fraud-allegations-campaign-donations-ilhan-omar\/\">passed along their payments<\/a> in 2022 to Sabathani and two other minority-owned food shelves after Ghedi and Amed were named as suspects in the Feeding Our Future fraud ring.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-16\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-2\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cShe did donate the money, but she had taken their money when they were actively involved in the scheme,\u201d Minnesota state Rep. Kristin Robbins said in an interview with the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>, adding, \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/investigations\/4541758\/how-minnesota-attorney-general-keith-ellison-is-embroiled-in-the-feeding-our-future-scandal\/\">as did [Minnesota Attorney General] Keith Ellison<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Robbins, the Republican chairwoman of the state\u2019s House fraud prevention and oversight committee, has spearheaded <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/investigations\/4538139\/minnesota-fraud-committee-suspects-ilhan-omar-of-involvement-in-feeding-our-future-scheme\/\">an investigation<\/a> into Omar\u2019s involvement in the Feeding Our Future scandal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Omar <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/omar.house.gov\/media\/press-releases\/representative-omar-introduces-bill-protect-access-school-meals-during-school\">introduced the bill<\/a>, the Maintaining Essential Access to Lunch for Students Act, that drastically relaxed eligibility requirements for food distributors to be able to receive reimbursements during the COVID-19 school shutdowns. By granting waivers that allowed nonschool-based caterers to claim compensation, Omar\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/116th-congress\/house-bill\/6187\">MEALS Act<\/a> is believed to have incentivized the Feeding Our Future fraud network to enroll phantom entities as food distribution sites in the after-school meal delivery program. Court documents citing the 2021 communications between Bock and congressional staffers in Omar\u2019s office were entered as <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/storage.courtlistener.com\/recap\/gov.uscourts.mnd.203016\/gov.uscourts.mnd.203016.451.0.pdf\">government exhibits<\/a> in the fraud kingpin\u2019s federal trial. The entries mentioned multiple texts and emails, including an email exchange requesting \u201cHelp with USDA Food Program.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The congresswoman, a Somali refugee herself, directly promoted the MEALS Act to her Somali constituents. In 2020, she filmed <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JBartle44051086\/status\/1988356947876180149\">a promotional video<\/a>, broadcast on Somali TV of Minnesota, at Safari Restaurant, whose owner, Salim Said, was a high-ranking Feeding Our Future associate <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/usao-mn\/pr\/federal-jury-finds-feeding-our-future-mastermind-and-co-defendant-guilty-250-million\">jointly tried<\/a> with Bock years later. The clip showed Omar touting the MEALS Act\u2019s passage while highlighting Safari Restaurant as a site where such subsidized meals were available.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Safari Restaurant, the top meal-site sponsor in Feeding Our Future\u2019s nexus, was <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.americanexperiment.org\/history-between-ilhan-omar-and-safari-restaurant-goes-back-years\/\">a frequent venue and caterer<\/a> for the congresswoman\u2019s campaign events, both during Omar\u2019s statehouse days and her congressional run. Omar <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190202070721\/https:\/\/mshale.com\/2018\/08\/15\/ilhan-omar-wins-democratic-primary-for-us-congress\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20190202070721\/https:\/\/mshale.com\/2018\/08\/15\/ilhan-omar-wins-democratic-primary-for-us-congress\/\">held her 2018 election party<\/a> at Safari Restaurant when she first ran for Congress and continued to use Safari Restaurant as an event space and catering services, charging the site 12 times over a two-year period. From 2018 to 2020, she spent <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fec.gov\/data\/disbursements\/?data_type=processed&#038;committee_id=C00680934&#038;recipient_name=Safari\">almost $10,000<\/a> at the locale on food, drinks, and rental fees.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-4\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-4\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-25\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-4\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As for Omar\u2019s relationship with the Sabathani Community Center, however, Robbins noted that candidates who have received contributions from controversial figures will often forward those donations on to local charities, rather than keep the cash themselves or refund it to the disreputable donors.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThat\u2019s what politicians tend to do: They give it to nonprofits in their community when there\u2019s a problem with a donation,\u201d Robbins told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cYou wouldn\u2019t want them to give it back to the fraudsters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Omar has paid Sabathani more than $46,700 in monthly facility rental fees since <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/repilhanomar.medium.com\/august-2013-open-house-congressional-update-b5dfe8bed32f\">she moved her district office<\/a> into the community center in 2023, according to the congresswoman\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fec.gov\/data\/disbursements\/?data_type=processed&#038;committee_id=C00680934&#038;recipient_name=SABATHANI+COMMUNITY+CENTER\">campaign finance disclosures<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-26\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-5\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-instagram wp-block-embed-instagram\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" data-instgrm-captioned=\"\" data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/CvxCXHGg7xW\/?utm_source=ig_embed&#038;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\" style=\" background:#FFF; According to Sabathani\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/sabathani.org\/building-partners-directory\/\">\u201cbuilding partner directory,\u201d<\/a> the center also houses two home healthcare agencies, an occupational therapist specializing in \u201cracial identity,\u201d a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >somatic counselor helping clients \u201cheal<\/a> from white supremacy,\u201d a psychotherapy practice working with \u201cmarginalized\u201d individuals who are experiencing \u201ccommunity trauma,\u201d and a daycare on the lower level that accepts subsidies through the state\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/investigations\/4364152\/walz-allies-led-state-agencies-alleged-somali-daycare-fraud\/\">fraud-fraught<\/a> Child Care Assistance Program.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Sabathani Community Center has served as a meeting place for members of the Somali community to discuss issues specific to Minnesota\u2019s Somali diaspora.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2015, federal investigators and Somali leaders met at Sabathani to workshop ways to <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.startribune.com\/somali-community-looks-at-cutting-terror-recruiting-ties\/333147661\">cut off terrorism-recruitment ties<\/a> in the city\u2019s close-knit Somali community. The town hall aimed to disrupt jihadi enlistment efforts among the area\u2019s Somali population, as a flow of young recruits continued to leave the Twin Cities to join groups like the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant and Al-Shabaab, al Qaeda\u2019s offshoot in Somalia.
