Armour alleged that Clark’s perceived racial fanbase and behavior have led to dangerous situations, including racial threats and abuse, referencing the history of racial violence like lynching for context. She also suggested that Clark’s actions, such as arguing calls and flopping, are linked to racist elements and could incite violence, drawing a controversial comparison to the lynching of Emmett Till.

This sparked widespread backlash, including from critics like Dave Portnoy, who condemned Armour’s comparisons as both inaccurate and inappropriate.Armour issued a vague apology, admitting her comparison lacked context but still emphasizing concerns about racial threats faced by Black WNBA players. Critics accused her of inflating the situation and exploiting racial tensions for sensationalism. The WNBA’s All-Star Game this weekend is in Chicago, Emmett Till’s hometown, and a local art gallery is currently hosting an exhibitimagining his life if he hadn’t been lynched. While it’s incumbent on the WNBA to do more to protect its players, there also should be an expectation on Clark to recognize the wider consequences of her actions.

Till was the victim of a 1955 lynching in Mississippi at the age of 14.
