Two days ago, it stood at 4.7 points.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Encouraging signs have been in short supply for Republicans focused on House races. But a memo written by a senior party strategist, and shared with <em>Secrets<\/em>, offers a bullish outlook, fueled by recent polling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe conventional wisdom in D.C. is that the House majority is already gone,\u201d it said. \u201cThe polling doesn\u2019t back that up, and there\u2019s good reason to think the real numbers are even better than what\u2019s public.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-16\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-2\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It goes on to say that Republicans are less likely to respond to surveys and that pollsters tend to oversample Democrats, compared to actual turnout.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even so, most commentators think the Republican Party is in for a shellacking. Conventional wisdom holds that <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.whttps:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/2026-election\/ashingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/2026-election\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.whttps:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/2026-election\/ashingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/2026-election\/\">November voters<\/a> will punish any party that holds the White House, the Senate, and the House going into the midterms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Factor in President Donald Trump\u2019s low approval rating, no end in sight to the Iran war, and gas prices back above $4 per gallon, and the outlook seems bleak for a party that will say goodbye to its House majority with the loss of just three seats.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-17\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-3\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe got to wrap it up,\u201d House Speaker Mike Johnson <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2026\/07\/22\/house-speaker-mike-johnson-end-iran-war\/91006777007\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2026\/07\/22\/house-speaker-mike-johnson-end-iran-war\/91006777007\/\">said of Iran earlier this week<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another possible wrinkle is emerging in the meantime. Prediction markets suggest a 50-50 chance of a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/4659814\/trump-predicts-another-government-shutdown-in-september\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/4659814\/trump-predicts-another-government-shutdown-in-september\/\">government shutdown in October<\/a> amid a backlog of spending bills, a shutdown that would likely be blamed on Republicans as the governing party.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet the GOP still has cards to play.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-4\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-4\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-25\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-4\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Top party and White House strategists met this week at the Four Seasons hotel to talk strategy, and how to spend a whopping $530 million war chest, <em>Secrets <\/em>is told.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They plan to turn the campaign into a \u201ccontrast election,\u201d highlighting how socialists are taking over the Democratic Party.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And they are taking comfort from polls showing the contest tightening.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-26\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-5\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">An RMG Research poll from the middle of July showed the Democratic lead shrinking to two points from nine in May, and a <em>Washington Post <\/em>poll showing the Republican deficit at only three points.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That poll also found that voters trust Republicans to do a better job on the economy (+4%), and are best to represent their values (+1%).<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mike Marinella, spokesman for the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/nrcc\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/nrcc\/\">National Republican Congressional Committee<\/a>, the campaign arm of House Republicans, said the public data were encouraging.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEvery poll that\u2019s come out in the last month shows this race tightening, and it\u2019s happening despite pollsters who\u2019ve been undercounting Republicans for a decade,\u201d he said. \u201cWith 100 days left, Republicans are on offense and ready to defy history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not everyone is convinced, however.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m seeing the Democratic lead expanding,\u201d said a Republican pollster who asked for anonymity in order to protect client relationships. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Either way, some of the tightening may be driven by Republicans coming home. As polling day nears, some of the \u201cout party\u2019s\u201d supporters may go from undecided back into the R column.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">And it could be that pollsters are now making their shift from polling all registered voters to likely voters, those who are more likely to actually turn out in November, altering sample composition.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Party insiders add that even accounting for those familiar trends, the position today compares favorably with the summer of 2018, an analogous cycle with Trump in power, and Republicans holding the House and Senate.Then, the <em>RealClearPolitics <\/em> average showed Democrats extending their lead by 4 points during the summer, compared with shrinking almost 3 points now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The memo says history suggests the president\u2019s party loses seats in the midterm elections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBut history also assumed accurate polling, a clear Democratic alternative, and no structural undercount of Republican support,\u201d it concludes. \u201cNone of those hold this cycle.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-is-trump-a-mets-fan\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Is Trump a Mets fan?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump held a rally in Georgia yesterday where he praised the local Major League Baseball team and threw shade at his hometown New York Mets.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He was joined onstage by Mike Plant, the president of Braves Development Company.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo, I like baseball,\u201d Trump said, \u201cbut this guy has done such a great job. You know, the Mets have the highest salary in baseball, and they lose all the time. And I say, \u2018Maybe we can steal this guy.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump\u2019s use of \u201cwe\u201d for the Mets is interesting. He is a Queens native, putting him firmly in Mets territory, and has occasionally been spotted at their games. But he has generally identified more with the Yankees. (Can\u2019t think why a man noted for his love of gold and winning would go for the rich, winning, glamorous team across town.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So maybe he wasn\u2019t announcing a rapid switch of allegiance. Let\u2019s assume it was a classic politician\u2019s ploy by bigging up the local team and ridiculing the Mets. The audience would have enjoyed his dig at a divisional rival, all fueled by a <em>Wall Street Journal <\/em>story about the Mets\u2019 disastrous season. It was headlined: <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/sports\/baseball\/new-york-mets-payroll-2026-10fff585?st=bmgVFC&#038;reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/sports\/baseball\/new-york-mets-payroll-2026-10fff585?st=bmgVFC&#038;reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink\">The Mets are the biggest waste of money in baseball history<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-divided-nations\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Divided nations<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While we are on the subject of sport and politics, an interesting theory reaches us from the United Nations in New York.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A rumor has circulated for a while that Trump wants <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/4637413\/shadow-trump-hangs-over-world-cup-red-card-overturn-controversy-infantino\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/4637413\/shadow-trump-hangs-over-world-cup-red-card-overturn-controversy-infantino\/\">Gianni Infantino, the president of FIFA<\/a>, to be the next U.N. secretary-general when Antonio Guterres\u2019 term concludes at the end of the year. It even made it to the White House briefing room on Thursday morning, when press secretary <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/karoline-leavitt\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"11685\">Karoline Leavitt<\/a> said the two had not discussed the idea, as far as she knew.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Infantino missed a trick during the World Cup, points out U.N. watcher Richard Gowan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis rumor has been around for a while. Can\u2019t assess its accuracy,\u201d <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RichardGowan1\/status\/2079733829422428605\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RichardGowan1\/status\/2079733829422428605\">Goven posted<\/a>. \u201cBut if<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/FIFAcom\"> @FIFAcom<\/a> is as smart as folk claim, it wouldn\u2019t have left 2 of the P5 in 3rd place playoff\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">What can he mean?<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">France and England were both knocked out of the World Cup in the semifinals. They both have permanent seats on the U.N. Security Council (making them two of the P5 nations, as they are known), giving them an outsized say in who will get the top job next.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In other words, Infantino might have done himself a favor by ensuring they both reached the final at the expense of two nations that don\u2019t have permanent seats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not, of course, that anyone would suggest FIFA had influence over the outcome of the World Cup!
