Iowa and New Hampshire, historically the first states to vote, have fallen out of favor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Iowa and New Hampshire are seen as too white. Iowa also <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2020\/12\/12\/iowa-caucus-dnc-report-444649\">botched<\/a> its 2020 caucuses, which led to its demotion in the 2024\u00a0calendar.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 2024 Democratic primaries were not competitive, with then-President <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/joe-biden\/\">Joe Biden<\/a> facing only token opposition, though the schedule was revised to help him anyway. He later dropped out after\u00a0fumbling a debate and was replaced by Harris at the Democratic National Convention.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-16\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-2\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2028, the primary is expected to be much more competitive, and the order in which states vote could matter a great deal. New Hampshire remaining an early state could boost Ocasio-Cortez or another socialist. Sen. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/bernie-sanders\/\">Bernie Sanders<\/a> (I-VT) won the primary in 2020 and is still receiving 6% of the vote in the latest University of New Hampshire poll. If the octogenarian Sanders doesn\u2019t run, presumably most of those votes would go to Ocasio-Cortez.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Or New Hampshire could help Buttigieg, who finished a close second there in 2020 and is right behind the New York congresswoman in the UNH survey. It might at least help him gain control of the nonprogressive lane, at the expense of Govs. Josh Shapiro (D-PA) and Andy Beshear (D-KY) or former U.S. Ambassador to Japan Rahm Emanuel. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">South Carolina going first would appear to be a boon to Harris. Black voters in the state salvaged Biden\u2019s slow-starting 2020 campaign, handing him a landslide victory that reestablished him as the front-runner the rest of the way.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-17\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-3\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But that\u2019s where the racial coalition politics gets tricky for Democrats: Nevada, where the primary electorate is heavily Hispanic, also wants to go first.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIf Nevada gets elevated over South Carolina, it would be because of their Latino vote,\u201d South Carolina Democratic Party Chairwoman Christale Spain <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/07\/22\/us\/politics\/south-carolina-nevada-democrats-2028-presidential-calendar.html\">bluntly told <\/a>the <em>New York Times<\/em>. \u201cSo you would then be telling Black voters that you matter less than brown voters. And I refuse to believe that our party wants to send any type of message like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Putting it in those crude bean-counting terms may not yield the results the South Carolina Democratic leader wants, however. Hispanic voters swung heavily toward Trump and the GOP in 2024 and are expected to at least somewhat swing back toward the Democrats this year.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-4\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-4\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-25\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-4\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump\u2019s inroads with black men were more modest, and black women remained one of the Democrats\u2019 most reliable voting blocs, giving Harris 92% of the vote. Hispanics will be courted by both parties in 2028.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">South Carolina didn\u2019t need to be first to help Biden in 2020, after he lost badly in Iowa, New Hampshire, and Nevada. The same was true of Barack Obama in 2008, when the Palmetto State confirmed the dramatic shift in black support away from erstwhile front-runner Hillary Clinton to then-freshman senator from Illinois. South Carolina just needed to be early.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI learned that the best batter on the team is the cleanup hitter,\u201d Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC), arguably the state\u2019s most influential black Democratic elected official, said in the <em>New York Times<\/em> article. Fourth place. And so South Carolina will be OK continuing being the best batter on the team, the cleanup batter.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-26\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-5\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under this scenario, South Carolina could remain influential simply by being the first in the South and voting before Super Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Biden supporters didn\u2019t want to take that chance in 2024. Harris\u2019s lieutenants might feel the same way. Her <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/ron-desantis-blames-hillary-clinton-for-political-division-in-the-country\/\" title=\"Ron DeSantis accuses Hillary Clinton of causing political division.\">past presidential campaigns<\/a> have <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/columnists\/3114949\/the-kamala-harris-boom-and-bust-cycle\/\">started strong but then fizzled out<\/a>. She might not want to cede momentum to other candidates. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 2020, several nonsocialist candidates cleared the field for Biden to help prevent a Sanders nomination. The<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/daily-memo\/4652623\/what-dsa-wants\/\"> socialist wing of the party<\/a> looks <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4626998\/how-socialists-took-over-democratic-party\/\">much stronger now<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Maybe Democrats would circle the wagons around Harris or another candidate to avoid a socialist nominee once again. It seems more likely that ambitious Democrats would not want to invite the socialists\u2019 ire by coordinating with the party establishment against them. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/in_focus\/4650622\/democrats-searching-identity-two-years-after-joe-biden-exit\/\"><strong>DEMOCRATS STILL SEARCHING FOR IDENTITY TWO YEARS AFTER BIDEN\u2019S EXIT<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Harris would surely like to avoid the fate of Rudy Giuliani on the other side of the aisle. Giuliani led in the national polls for the 2008 Republican presidential nomination for many months. For various reasons, he was reluctant to compete in the early states. By the time he was ready to make his last stand in Florida, his polling lead had evaporated and the race had passed him by.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Much about the 2028 race remains up in the air.
