The DOJ,led by Harmeet Dhillon,is requesting specific information about these individuals,including their personal details and voting history,and has emphasized the need to preserve related records. The situation has arisen from a software malfunction linked to the state&#8217;s automatic voter registration system, which registered noncitizens despite their indicating they were not U.S. citizens, with some voters subsequently casting ballots. Mikie has some more explaining to do. <\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Department of Justice would like some more details on New Jersey\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/07\/22\/new-jersey-dems-did-nothing-for-years-after-warnings-about-noncitizens-on-voter-rolls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">voter registration debacle <\/a>in which a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxnews.com\/politics\/new-jersey-dem-govs-blame-game-backfires-tech-company-pins-noncitizen-voter-registration-state\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201csoftware error\u201d<\/a> reportedly led to some 6,600 noncitizens being added to the Garden State\u2019s voter rolls in 2023 and 2024. <\/p>\n<p>Harmeet Dhillon, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/breaking-antrim-co-forensic-report-bombshell-reveals-dominion-machines-were-set-at-68-05-error-ratemeaning-68-05-of-ballots-could-be-sent-out-for-mass-adjudication-giving-individuals-or-ma\/\" title=\"BREAKING: Antrim Co. Dale Caldwell five business days to turn over \u201cadditional information to assess New Jersey\u2019s compliance with various federal statutes.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The Justice Department previously requested information about New Jersey\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/publicinterestlegal.org\/press\/new-report-finds-over-32000-questionable-voter-records-in-new-jersey-echoing-patterns-identified-in-maine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">dirty voter rolls <\/a>in a July 7 letter to Caldwell, who also serves as secretary of state and oversees its Division of Elections. Now, the stakes are suddenly significantly higher. <\/p>\n<h2>\u2018Preserve Any and All Records\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Dhillon wants the names of the 6,600 individuals identified\u00a0 \u2014 their \u201cfull names, dates of birth, nationalities, residential addresses, and registration dates and locations.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Sherrill divulged the \u201cglitch\u201d Tuesday at a <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.com\/US\/new-jersey-accidentally-registered-6600-noncitizens-vote-governor\/story?id=134959825\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">press conference<\/a> in which she unironically accused President Donald Trump of making \u201cbizarre conspiracy theories about fraud with no evidence\u201d as the Democrat announced evidence of noncitizens on her state\u2019s voting rolls. She noted that about 400 of the 6,600 foreign nationals went on to vote in New Jersey elections. <\/p>\n<p>Dhillon also wants Jersey election officials to detail to the DOJ \u201cwhen and where\u201d the noncitizens voted and provide the certification and signature, required under New Jersey law, for those who voted by mail ballot. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAdditionally, please treat this correspondence as a request to preserve any and all records relating to today\u2019s disclosure,\u201d Dhillon wrote. <\/p>\n<p>The Justice Department simultaneously offered an update on the new developments to the district court presiding over its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/opa\/pr\/justice-department-sues-five-additional-states-failure-produce-voter-rolls\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">lawsuit<\/a> \u2014 <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/crt\/media\/1429046\/dl?utm_medium=email&#038;utm_source=govdelivery\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">United States v. Caldwell<\/a><\/em>  \u2014 seeking New Jersey\u2019s unredacted voter rolls. <\/p>\n<h2>\u2018Registered Them to Vote Anyway\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Like several other blue state governors, Sherrill has railed against the lawsuit, accusing Trump of trying to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nj.gov\/governor\/news\/2026\/approved\/20260721a.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cweaponize elections for political gain.\u201d <\/a> New Jersey has rebuffed the Justice Department\u2019s voter list requests, <a href=\"https:\/\/newjerseymonitor.com\/2026\/02\/27\/trump-sues-new-jersey-voter-private-information\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">asserting <\/a>that the state is \u201ccommitted to protecting the privacy of our state\u2019s residents and we will defend against this lawsuit in court.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sean Higgins, the governor\u2019s spokesman, told several media outlets that the Trump administration has a \u201clong history of weaponizing\u201d in attempts to \u201coverturn election results.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cGovernor Sherrill has been clear that she will use all the legal tools available to her to protect New Jerseyans\u2019 personal information,\u201d Higgins said, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aol.com\/articles\/doj-gives-jersey-5-days-155945000.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reiterating<\/a> Sherrill\u2019s criticism of the France-based software vendor and her Democrat predecessor\u2019s administration. They\u2019re to blame, Sherrill claimed at Tuesday\u2019s press conference. <\/p>\n<p>But the tech company, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.idemia.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">IDEMIA<\/a>,<a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/07\/22\/us-news\/software-vendor-says-nj-approved-6600-noncitizens-who-were-registered-to-vote\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> told <\/a>the New York Post that New Jersey officials had access to the same information on the noncitizens \u201cbut apparently registered them to vote anyway.\u201d Reportedly, the software the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) used to automatically register individuals to vote when applying for driver\u2019s licenses and other ID failed to block the noncitizens from the list even though the applicants noted on their forms that they were not U.S. citizens. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe 6,600 records submitted to the [MVC] and Division of Elections contained correct information according to the design specifications as set out by the state,\u201d Lisa Shoemaker, an IDEMIA spokeswoman, told the Post on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll 6,600 individuals indicated \u2018Yes\u2019 to wanting to register to vote and \u2018NO\u2019 to being a US Citizen,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis information was recorded correctly and always available,\u201d she added. <\/p>\n<p>More than two dozen states and the District of Columbia use similar automatic registration systems,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncsl.org\/elections-and-campaigns\/automatic-voter-registration\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> according to <\/a>the National Conference of State Legislatures. <\/p>\n<h2>\u2018Illegally Diluted\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Department of Homeland Security <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/07\/17\/us-news\/trump-admin-claims-california-may-have-190k-non-citizens-on-voter-rolls\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reviews <\/a>found more than 35,000 potential noncitizens on New Jersey\u2019s voter rolls. The DOJ analyzed voter registration data from four states \u2014 New Jersey, California, Nevada and Pennsylvania \u2014\u00a0 and said it found more than 250,000 potential noncitizens on their rolls. In California, the number was nearly 191,000. <\/p>\n<p>Sherrill says her administration has launched an independent investigation. New Jersey Assembly Republican Leader John DiMaio is calling for a thorough audit and new election integrity safeguards. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cNew Jersey Republicans have been sounding the alarm for years that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/pennsylvanias-switch-to-automatic-voter-registration-is-inconsistent-with-state-law-election-experts-say\/\" title=\"Election experts claim Pennsylvania&#039;s automatic ...r registration switch contradicts state law.\">automatic voter registration process<\/a> at the MVC was highly problematic,\u201d DiMaio said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Citizens4NJEI\/status\/2079656509789642898\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">press release<\/a>. \u201cIn 2020 and again in 2025, voters were disenfranchised after the system changed party affiliations. When we questioned MVC officials, they refused to disclose how they safeguard the process.
