The trial date was set by U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein after prosecutors and defense attorneys agreed. Both defendants have pleaded not guilty and could face life imprisonment if convicted.

Maduro and Flores were captured by U.S. forces during a raid in Caracas in January 2026,under the management of President Donald Trump, who criticized Maduro as an illegitimate dictator and key figure in a criminal network. They are currently held at Brooklyn’s Metropolitan Detention Center. The prosecution alleges they participated in a conspiracy to traffic cocaine over more than 25 years.

Legal challenges are expected, particularly concerning maduro’s immunity claims related to his time in office and disputes over classified evidence. Defense lawyers plan to challenge the legality of maduro’s detention and argue that he is protected by presidential immunity, asserting that the crimes occurred while he was in office. The case may also evolve into wider debates about international law and presidential immunity.

Maduro rose to power in 2013 amid disputed elections, and many countries, including the U.S., did not recognize his legitimacy after 2018. After his capture, Venezuela’s interim president, Delcy Rodriguez, took over, made military reshuffles, and complied with U.S. demands, leading to sanctions being lifted against her in April. Maduro’s legal team intends to frame the case as involving issues of immunity and sovereignty, while prosecutors aim to focus on allegations of involvement in organized drug trafficking. The trial and legal proceedings are anticipated to be complex and contentious.

Disgraced former Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro and his wife are scheduled to stand trial June 1, 2027, on charges that they participated in a decadeslong conspiracy to flood the United States with cocaine.

U.S. District Judge Alvin Hellerstein, a 92-year-old appointee of former President Bill Clinton, set the date Wednesday at the joint request of federal prosecutors and defense attorneys for Maduro and Cilia Flores.
