Eight years later, over the same time frame, Republicans have gained nearly 3 points in the summer months.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The <em><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/2026\/07\/18\/democrats-have-slim-lead-race-house-washington-post-ipsos-poll-finds\/\">Washington Post<\/a><\/em>\/Ipsos poll showed Democrats leading the generic ballot, 48%-45%, a 2-point swing from the last version of the poll in April. At this point in 2018, Democrats held a 10-point lead in the <em>Washington Post<\/em>\/Ipsos poll on the generic ballot.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Democrats won 40 seats in 2018, but the 2026 midterm elections are not expected to produce such a wave. President Donald Trump\u2019s war with Iran and affordability concerns also loom over Republicans. Midterm elections are typically referendums on the president, and Trump\u2019s approval rating currently sits at just 36%, according to the <em>Economist<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-17\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-3\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the Democratic Party also faces a major popularity problem. The <em>RealClear Polling<\/em> aggregate has the party more than 17 points underwater in favorability. This cycle, we started in a deficit.
