Mikie Sherrill <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/GovSherrillNJ\/status\/2079602942722662725?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">announced<\/a> Tuesday that her administration learned about a \u201csoftware error\u201d in the state\u2019s motor vehicle system that \u201cled to the registration of roughly 6,600 people who indicated they were not U.S. citizens between June 2023 and June 2024. \u2026 These individuals answered \u2018no\u2019 when asked on a keypad whether they were a U.S. citizen when applying for drivers\u2019 licenses and identification cards, but through no fault of their own, the system registered them anyway.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-1530582785\" class=\"d-flex justify-content-center fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2 fdrlst__b89e9-entity-placement\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1463670073398-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sherrill was not in office at the time of the security failure.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A \u201cpreliminary analysis shows fewer than 400 individuals who were newly registered for the first time because of the error voted,\u201d the governor continued. Sherrill said she has ordered her administration to remove any residents from voter rolls who were \u201cerroneously added\u201d and indicated that the state is in the \u201cprocess of replacing the vendor responsible for administering the system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In other words, our elections are insecure and vulnerable to foreign election interference. Noncitizens can (and do) register to vote, and they also can (and do) illegally vote in our elections. In fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/06\/12\/hundreds-of-noncitizens-found-on-new-jersey-voter-rolls-after-senate-gop-helps-block-save-america-act\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Federalist<\/a> previously reported that voter rolls from at least eight of the state\u2019s 21 counties show several instances in which noncitizens were registered to vote, with several stating they did \u201cnot understand\u201d how they became \u201cregistered through the Department of Motor Vehicles, allegedly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republicans, including Trump, have warned about this vulnerability for years. But even as Sherrill acknowledged that thousands of noncitizens were improperly registered and hundreds apparently voted, she still felt compelled to reassure leftists that her newfound concern for election integrity should not be confused with Trump\u2019s longstanding warnings about the very problem she just confirmed. <\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cAs the Trump Administration tries to weaponize elections for political gain, I am ensuring we protect our elections. Let me be clear: Donald Trump has zero credibility on the issue of election integrity. For more than ten years, he has worked to undermine Americans\u2019 faith in our elections by spreading lies about legitimate election results, attempting to overturn a free and fair election, encouraging an attack on our Capitol when he couldn\u2019t accept the will of the voters, and defunding election security at the federal level,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the evidence that Trump has far more credibility on the issue of election integrity than most Democrats simply continues to mount. Because it is <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/03\/05\/north-carolinas-two-vote-race-is-exactly-why-the-save-act-is-so-necessary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Democrats who insist<\/a> this recurring problem isn\u2019t actually happening and that we don\u2019t need the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act despite yet <em>another <\/em>instance of noncitizens making it onto the voter rolls and even voting.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The SAVE America Act would amend the 1993 National Voter Registration Act (NVRA) to require documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote as well as voter ID to cast a ballot. The NVRA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/crt\/national-voter-registration-act-1993-nvra\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">requires<\/a> automatic voter registration at DMVs and \u2014 due to a bad Supreme Court ruling in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/05\/13\/without-the-save-act-the-only-thing-keeping-foreigners-from-voting-is-the-honor-system\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Arizona v. Inter Tribal Council of Arizona<\/a> <\/em>\u2014 prohibits states from adding documentary proof of citizenship requirements for federal voter registration forms. By amending the NVRA with the SAVE America Act, states like New Jersey would not need to worry about noncitizens erroneously ending up on voter rolls \u2014 and even voting \u2014 because they would not be able to register to vote unless they provide <em>actual<\/em> proof of citizenship rather than merely checking a box \u201cyes\u201d or \u201cno\u201d under penalty of perjury.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yet Democrats (and a handful of RINOs) are still holding up this election-integrity legislation that would solve the very problem that even Democrats are now forced to confront.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<div class=\"article-author-description fst-italic\">      Brianna Lyman is an elections correspondent at The Federalist.
