He has spoken openly about the importance of prioritizing family and the need to combat anti-child attitudes. His personal decision to expand his family was influenced by a friend&#8217;s regret over having only two children,which motivated him and Usha to have a fourth. Vance and his wife Usha announced the birth of their fourth child, Alec Neel Vance, the first child born to a sitting vice president in 156 years.<\/p>\n<p>In a signed statement released on X, Vance said that his wife and newborn son were both healthy, and expressed his thanks to the doctors and staff at Walter Reed Medical Center and in the White House Medical Unit. Alec Neel Vance joins 9-year-old Ewan, 6-year-old Vivek, and 4-year-old Mirabel to bring the Vance family to six total members.<\/p>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/jd-usha-vance-baby-family-b488eb2e698ea2159d15427ad97e1151\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">White House Historical Association<\/a>, the last time a sitting second lady had a child was in 1870, when Vice President Schuyler Colfax and his wife Ellen had a child while in office. Ulysses Grant was president at the time.<\/p>\n<p>Though it has been extremely uncommon for such high-ranking government officials to have children while serving in such demanding roles, it seems to be a trend in the second Trump administration. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt just had her <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/karoline-leavitt-welcomes-second-baby-11958330\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">second<\/a> child while serving in her current role, and White House Deputy Chief-of-Staff Stephen Miller and his <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/KatieMiller\/status\/2053276343479984210?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wife <\/a>just had their <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/stephen-miller-and-wife-katie-welcome-fourth-baby-11971278\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">fourth<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This baby boom within the administration should not be a surprise to anyone, given its consistent messaging encouraging Americans to create \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolitics.com\/video\/2023\/03\/05\/trump_wants_to_build_new_cities_get_rid_of_ugly_buildings_support_new_baby_boom.html?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">a new baby boom<\/a>\u201d by having more children in the midst of the <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/how-many-babies-are-born-us-25d99f438645908e5ed6ae29d3914b89\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">plunging fertility rates<\/a> in the United States.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pewresearch.org\/short-reads\/2026\/06\/17\/is-us-fertility-at-an-all-time-low-it-depends-how-you-measure-it\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">According<\/a> to Pew Research Center, the United States total fertility rate reached an all-time low of 1.6 children per woman in 2024, which is <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2024\/12\/02\/heres-how-to-actually-reverse-the-baby-bust\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">well below<\/a> the replacement rate of 2.1. In 2023 only 12 percent of Americans <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/511238\/americans-preference-larger-families-highest-1971.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported having<\/a> four or more children.<\/p>\n<p>Vance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DZ2bOL2x7k_\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">has<\/a> been at the forefront of the conservative pro-kids <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/jd-vance-childless-cat-ladies-birth-rates-555c0f78ef8dd4c13c88b9e8d5f0024a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">campaign<\/a> for years, and he and his wife are taking their own advice. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur people aren\u2019t having enough children to replace themselves. That should bother us,\u201d Vance said back in 2019. \u201cWe want babies not just because they are economically useful. We want more babies because children are good. And we believe children are good, because we are not sociopaths.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In 2021, Vance <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/yt4_CdS3Kgs?si=TJfJqNp9ztQN6fWU&#038;t=2162\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">joined<\/a> <em>The Federalist Radio Hour<\/em> to discuss a potential campaign for a Senate seat, and he continued to emphasize his belief that the United States government should emphasize the importance of having children. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe owe something to our country. We owe something to our future. The best way to invest in it is to ensure the next generation actually exists,\u201d he said. \u201cI think we have to go to war against the anti-child ideology that exists in our country.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In January, Vice President Vance spoke at the National March For Life Rally, only days after he and Usha announced their pregnancy. He began his speech by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=akCFsWnu3KQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">saying<\/a>, \u201cIn my remarks last year, I told you all one of the things I most wanted in the United States of America was more families and more babies. So let the record show, you have a vice president who practices what he preaches.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In his newly released book <em>Communion: Finding My Way Back To Faith<\/em>, Vance writes that by 2025, he and his wife had come to the conclusion that they were probably content with three children. However, after the <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/07\/09\/heres-what-you-need-to-know-about-the-charlie-kirk-assassination-trial-day-4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">assassination<\/a> of Charlie Kirk, Erika Kirk told them that she regretted only having two kids with Charlie before his death. This inspired the Vances to bring another child into their family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was very powerful, what [Erika] said about her own family, and certainly very moving to both of us,\u201d Usha <a href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/jd-and-usha-vance-clarify-erika-kirk-impact-on-their-decision-to-have-a-fourth-baby-11997731\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> in a CBS interview. \u201cIt really did crystallize for you, that sense that if you could have that other child, then you would have nothing to regret.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Though conservatives have had to deal with plenty of difficulty and danger in the aftermath of Charlie Kirk\u2019s death, J.D. Vance <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/EricLDaugh\/status\/2066168131182088685?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">believed<\/a> that having a baby is \u201cfundamentally \u2026 a hopeful thing\u201d that would brighten their perspective on the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are always dangers in the world.
