The 76-year-old leader pleaded guilty to operating a criminal enterprise and racketeering conspiracy, with the sentence prompted by the involvement of at least 1.5 million kilograms of cocaine. As part of his plea, Zambada agreed to forfeit up to $15 billion, reflecting decades of cartel profits. After Guzman was convicted in New York in 2019 and sentenced to life in prison, prosecutors said Zambada assumed exclusive control of the cartel and expanded its fentanyl trafficking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Zambada was taken into U.S. custody in 2024 after authorities say he was lured on to an airplane in Mexico by Joaqu\u00edn Guzman Lopez, one of El Chapo\u2019s sons, and flown to Texas. He pleaded guilty in July last year after prosecutors agreed not to seek the death penalty.
