Mejia, previously the political director of Sanders\u2019s 2020 presidential campaign, is co-director of the Center for Popular Democracy, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/populardemocracy.org\/about\/\">a progressive group<\/a> \u201cunapologetically demand[ing] transformational change for Black, brown, and low-income communities.\u201d The organization is allied with teachers unions to prevent the proliferation of charter schools, which operate independent of the public school system. Mejia, the daughter of <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.njspotlightnews.org\/2016\/03\/16-03-08-profile-family-s-own-story-motivates-her-to-help-the-working-poor-in-nj\/\">an initially \u201cundocumented\u201d immigrant<\/a>, herself is in favor of tuition-free college, student loan forgiveness, and <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.inquirer.com\/politics\/new-jersey\/ice-new-jersey-gun-mikie-sherrill-20260213.html\">has called for<\/a> the abolition of Immigration and Customs Enforcement.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Brooks is the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cityandstatepa.com\/politics\/2026\/05\/bob-brooks-wins-lehigh-valleys-hotly-contested-pa-7-primary\/413658\/\">handpicked choice<\/a> of Gov. Josh Shapiro (D-PA) to take back Lehigh Valley\u2019s congressional seat, which national Democrats have set their sights on as one of the most likely to flip blue. NNU gave an additional <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/docquery.fec.gov\/cgi-bin\/fecimg\/?202605049866792375\">$100,000<\/a> to Stronger Together PA, the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/docquery.fec.gov\/cgi-bin\/forms\/C00936153\/1934881\/\">newly established<\/a> super PAC dedicated exclusively to <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fec.gov\/data\/independent-expenditures\/?committee_id=C00936153&#038;data_type=processed&#038;q_spender=C00936153&#038;is_notice=true&#038;support_oppose_indicator=S\">supporting Brooks<\/a> through digital advertisements and text banking.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among other non-WFP candidates, NNU donated similar amounts to climate activist William Lawrence, leader of the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/investigations\/4431020\/activist-group-organize-minneapolis-high-school-student-ice-protest\/\">Sunrise Movement<\/a>; incumbent Rep. Maxwell Frost (D-FL); and Illinois Lt. Gov. Juliana Stratton, who is seeking the Senate seat left by departing Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL).<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-17\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-3\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Stratton believes <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/news.wttw.com\/elections\/voters-guide\/2026-primary\/juliana-stratton\">\u201cICE must be abolished\u201d<\/a> and that universal healthcare coverage is <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/news.wttw.com\/2026\/04\/06\/lt-gov-juliana-stratton-her-us-senate-campaign-health-care-funding-and-raising-minimum\">\u201ca right\u201d<\/a> that can be guaranteed by instituting a \u201cMedicare for all\u201d model, an idea in line with NNU\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalnursesunited.org\/about\">primary policy position<\/a> of advancing the government takeover of health insurance through a single-payer \u201cMedicare for all\u201d system. Frost, formerly the national organizing director for March for Our Lives and the first Generation Z member of Congress, initially ran against the centrist wing of the Democratic Party, particularly its willingness to <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wbur.org\/npr\/1109193929\/the-first-gen-z-candidates-are-running-for-congress-and-running-against-compromi\">\u201ccompromise\u201d<\/a> on key issues, including gun control. NNU has cut checks to outside groups like March for Our Lives, giving <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/projects.propublica.org\/nonprofits\/organizations\/271450491\/202322709349300047\/full\">grant money<\/a> to the gun control group\u2019s action fund.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">NNU, the largest union of registered nurses in the United States, has <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/op-eds\/4634483\/union-workers-funding-lavish-lifestyles-big-labor-bosses\/\">faced criticism<\/a> for spending donor funds on political issues ostensibly unrelated to nurses\u2019 interests, all while <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/groups\/666052475849480\/posts\/682038150917579\/\">collecting membership dues<\/a> from working nurses. href=\"https:\/\/home.nuhw.org\/what-is-a-union\/\">\u201ccritical in the healthcare industry.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The union <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/nuhw.org\/topic\/blackhistory\/\">says<\/a> its advocacy work \u201cwill never be complete until we create an anti-racist healthcare system,\u201d believes that <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/nuhw.org\/the-pandemic-proves-we-need-single-payer-medicare-for-all\/\">\u201cmedical racism,\u201d<\/a> a concept derived from critical race theory, is \u201ca crisis\u201d in America, and has hosted <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/nuhw.org\/honoring-the-memory-of-george-floyd\/\">inclusivity training Federation of Teachers<\/h2>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to its 2026 filings, the American Federation of Teachers, the country\u2019s second-largest teachers union, has <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fec.gov\/data\/disbursements\/?data_type=processed&#038;committee_id=C00028860&#038;recipient_name=Mejia&#038;recipient_name=Wahab&#038;two_year_transaction_period=2026\">financially supported<\/a> the congressional bids of Wahab and Mejia, respectively donating $2,500 and $10,000.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The union\u2019s Committee on Political Education also earmarked <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/docquery.fec.gov\/cgi-bin\/fecimg\/?202605299870347007\">$500,000<\/a> for the Democrat-dedicated Senate Majority PAC, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/docquery.fec.gov\/cgi-bin\/fecimg\/?202605299870347008\">$150,000<\/a> for the Democratic Legislative Campaign Committee, and <a
