Senator Adam Schiff questions former Attorney General John Ashcroft about whether presidents can instruct the attorney general to prosecute enemies, to which Ashcroft responds that enforcement should be impartial and that no one is exempt from obeying the law, regardless of enmity. Schiff suggests that some actions by political opponents, like certain statements and social media posts, could be viewed as incitements and threats, especially when linked to figures like James Comey or Democratic lawmakers urging disobedience in the military. The debate underscores concerns over potential political bias in legal enforcement and the notion that current political opponents could be targeted or protected depending on who is in power. Ashcroft emphasizes that law enforcement’s role is to apply laws equally, without exceptions for political hostility. The discussion includes references to recent political events, Twitter statements from various senators, and commentary on how political motivation might influence legal actions.

I didn’t know there was a particular carve-out in the U.S. Constitution or in federal law where, if you’ve very publicly made yourself an enemy of the president, your past or present behavior is non-prosecutable.

Apparently, Sen.
