Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts is facing criticism over its management of a $250 million renovation, which allegedly was rushed to align with President Donald TrumpS schedule and aesthetic preferences. Whistleblowers claimed that the renovation included shoddy work, irregular contracting practices, and wasteful spending, such as a costly paint job on columns and an overpriced flooring contract awarded without competition. Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse, a Kennedy Center board member, highlighted concerns that management bypassed normal contracting rules and prioritized Trump’s events over proper maintenance. In response, the Kennedy Center defended its actions, attributing the renovation to Trump’s vision and emphasizing its commitment to transparency. The controversy has raised broader questions about the center’s management and the integrity of the renovation process, with critics condemning the work as superficial and driven by political motives. The Center also responded to specific allegations, explaining the nature of certain contracts and repairs. The issue continues to be scrutinized amid ongoing legal and political debates.

The John F. Management told staff, “We’ll deal with the lawsuits later,” Whitehouse claimed. Other allegations included concerns that shoddy work was completed to paint the building’s columns white, reportedly costing over $1.5 million to fix subsequent issues; that a South Carolina firm with no experience installing concert hall stage flooring received an $8 million no-bid contract to replace flooring in the center’s concert hall; and that a cosmetic revamp of the East Plaza Reflecting Pool is already failing, with only a basic maintenance completed, instead of an overhaul.

A security officer stands near the John F.
