Blanche, who has been serving as acting attorney general as April, will testify alongside other officials, including Jay Clayton, Trump’s candidate for director of national intelligence. The hearing is expected to be brief, with each senator allocated only 10 minutes of questioning, and will include discussions on topics such as DOJ ethics, Epstein-related issues, and tax settlement questions involving Trump’s family.

Supporters, including the White House and various law enforcement groups, have endorsed blanche, highlighting his prosecutorial background and tenure at the DOJ. However, some GOP members remain cautious; Sens. Thom Tillis and John Cornyn have expressed concerns about his independence, especially given recent revelations about his meeting with Ghislaine Maxwell and his role in subpoenaing reporters, notably concerning the NY Times’ coverage of Trump. The hearing occurs amid broader political uncertainties, including GOP senator Mitch McConnell’s hospitalization, which tightens the Senate’s margin.

Additionally, Clayton’s upcoming confirmation hearing at the Senate Intelligence Committee is drawing scrutiny over past subpoenas for journalists, which critics argue could threaten press freedom and suggest partisan motives. Blanche’s confirmation faces hurdles from skeptical Republican senators and opposition groups citing concerns over independence and transparency.

President Donald Trump’s nominee for attorney general, Todd Blanche, will face a high-stakes confirmation hearing before the Senate Judiciary Committee on Wednesday, as Republicans confront a narrow margin and lingering questions about his independence from the White House.

Blanche, who has been serving as acting attorney general after Pam Bondi was ousted in April, will appear before the committee Wednesday and Thursday.
