Lindsey Graham died unexpectedly on Saturday from a heart condition at the age of 71. Graham, a retired Air Force officer who served more than two decades in the Senate, was influential in the Republican Party on foreign policy, election integrity, and national security.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The New York Times chose to remember him somewhat differently. <\/p>\n<div id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-2741698665\" class=\"d-flex justify-content-center fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2 fdrlst__b89e9-entity-placement\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1463670073398-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In its <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/07\/12\/us\/politics\/lindsey-graham-dead.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">obituary<\/a> for the longtime senator, Robert Jimison, Zachary Woolfe, and Amelia Nierenberg headlined their piece: \u201cLindsey Graham, Republican Senator and Staunch Trump Ally, Dies at 71.\u201d Their subhead immediately included a line about his foreign policy, before returning to the subject at hand, that is, his death: \u201cHe consistently pushed for the use of U.S. military power overseas. The Washington, D.C., medical examiner said he died of an aortic dissection, a tear in the body\u2019s main artery.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s unclear why an obituary subhead announcing Graham\u2019s death also needed to include a sentence summing up his legacy in a policy position that some have found controversial.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Times then followed that coverage with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/07\/13\/us\/lindsey-graham-black-voters.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">separate piece<\/a> entitled \u201cLindsey Graham Had a Complicated Relationship With Black Voters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Eduardo Medina and Emily Cochraine wrote that while Graham \u201ccharmed many people at home, in Washington, and overseas \u2026 he was often at odds with one constituency: Black voters, who make up about a quarter of the electorate.\u201d Notably the piece struggled to substantiate that framing. Instead it included several quotes from black leaders and activists about how Graham will be missed, with Rep. James Clyburn saying that Graham was \u201calways pleasant and productive on behalf of the people of South Carolina.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Compare the treatment of Graham to how the Times treated <em>actual<\/em> enemies of the United States.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Qassim Suleimani was killed in 2020 by U.S. airstrikes, the Times\u2019 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/01\/03\/obituaries\/qassem-soleimani-dead.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Tim Arango, Ronen Bergman, and Ben Hubbard<\/a> wrote: \u201cQassim Suleimani, Master of Iran\u2019s Intrigue, Built a Shiite Axis of Power in Mideast.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The subhead described Suleimani this way: \u201cThe commander helped direct wars in Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Yemen, and he became the face of Iran\u2019s efforts to build a regional bloc of Shiite power.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rather than leading with the fact that Suleimani was behind the murder of Americans and our allies, the obituary tried to portray him as a strategic commander. In the third paragraph of the piece, The Times\u2019 reporters wrote:  \u201cJust as his accomplishments shaped the creation of a Shiite axis of influence across the Middle East, with Iran at the center, his death is now likely to prove central to a new chapter of geopolitical tension across the region.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the days that followed, The Times continued its soft coverage, including articles entitled \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/01\/03\/world\/middleeast\/iranian-general-qassem-soleimani-killed.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Killing of Gen. Qassim Suleimani: What We Know Since the U.S. Airstrike<\/a>,\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/01\/03\/world\/middleeast\/suleimani-dead.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">What to Know About the Death of Iranian General Suleimani<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In fact, the Times even used a neutral headline for the death of Adolf <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/09\/29\/insider\/un-edition.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Hitler<\/a>. The New York Times\u2019 front page read in 1945: \u201cHitler Dead In Chancellery, Nazis Say: Doenitz Successor, Orders War To Go On: Berlin Almost Won; U.S. Armies Advance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s hard to ignore the fact that the Times went out of its way to make Graham\u2019s death partisan, but when one of the world\u2019s most notorious terrorists is killed, the paper introduced him to readers as a man who \u201cbuilt a Shiite axis of power\u201d who apparently had a vast geopolitical legacy.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<div class=\"article-author-description fst-italic\">      Brianna Lyman is an elections correspondent at The Federalist.
