However, recent developments have altered his approach; after a challenging primary, Maryland Senate president Bill Ferguson, a Democrat, announced support for a special legislative session in August to consider a constitutional amendment for redistricting. This shift was influenced by court rulings that weakened the federal Voting Rights Act, prompting Ferguson to support legislative action to establish a legal pathway for redistricting, subject to voter approval in November.Democrats in Maryland aim to redraw the congressional map to favor their party, potentially reducing Republican influence, notably targeting Rep. Andy Harris. Ferguson’s change of stance is viewed by some as a response to political pressures and recent court decisions, marking a departure from his previous resistance to such efforts. Moore, who is seen as a likely winner in the upcoming election and possibly eyeing a 2028 presidential run, emphasizes the importance of reform in light of national voting rights challenges. The move has garnered mixed reactions, with some critics arguing it serves moore’s political ambitions. The overall effort reflects broader Democratic strategy to reshape electoral boundaries while navigating legal and political hurdles.

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore could finally get the mid-decade redistricting he’s long championed to counter similar efforts by GOP-led states, but it won’t be in the fashion or timeline he envisioned.

In an about-face and in the aftermath of a grueling primary, Maryland Senate President Bill Ferguson, a Democrat, will support a special legislative session in August to consider a constitutional amendment for mid-decade redistricting.
