Graham: Will Push for ...&#039;s B Request From US for Iron Dome\">homes destroyed<\/a> by U.S.-manufactured weapons in conflicts across Iraq, Syria, and Palestine, became a subject of controversy and inquiry. The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) criticized the exhibit for lacking balanced perspectives, presenting a politically activist narrative that was perceived as sympathetic to terrorism and aligned with pro-Hamas messaging. Many visitors expressed concerns over the exhibit\u2019s editorial omissions and ideological bias. The museum&#8217;s handling of the exhibit drew scrutiny, especially after complaints highlighting its bias against America and Israel, and the placement of a <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >small trigger warning plaque<\/a> that was arduous to find. <\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the OIG revealed procedural flaws in the Smithsonian\u2019s review process, noting that the exhibit was funded with money intended for American women\u2019s history, which it did not qualify for. The investigation found that Smithsonian Directive 603, meant to ensure content balance and oversight, was poorly implemented, with recommendations to improve its rigor and documentation largely accepted by Smithsonian management. the report underscored systemic issues in content oversight and highlighted how political biases may influence exhibits in American museums.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooperhewitt.org\/making-home-access\/floor-2\/1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> Patterns of Life <\/a>exhibit in New York\u2019s Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum blames the American military for homes destroyed in Gaza in the Israel-Hamas war. The Office of the Inspector General identified multiple flaws in the Smithsonian\u2019s exhibition review process that allowed Cooper Hewitt to funnel $36,000 earmarked for American women\u2019s history to an exhibit blaming the U.S. for \u201cdomicide\u201d in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>The OIG <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oversight.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/reports\/2026-07\/OIG-E-26-01_0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">report<\/a>, released only days before the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/Smithsonian-Report-Saving-Americas-Story.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">White House\u2019s 162-page report<\/a> on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/news\/smithsonian-american-history-museum-embraced-extreme-political-activism-white-house-report-says\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/snopes-posts-bogus-pro-aoc-fact-check-ends-up-exposing-its-left-wing-bias\/\" title=\"Snopes Posts Bogus Pro-AOC \u2018Fact Check,\u2019 Ends Up Exposing Its Left-Wing ...\">left-wing bias<\/a> in the Smithsonian American History Museum<\/a>, continues to reveal how America\u2019s museums are captured by anti-American ideologies. The OIG began investigating the Patterns of Life exhibit after the museum received more than 2,600 complaints from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oversight.gov\/reports\/opportunities-exist-further-strengthen-smithsonians-content-review-process\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">visitors<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/diaspora\/antisemitism\/article-853247\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Israeli nongovernmental organization Shurat HaDin Law Center<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibit, which ran from November 2024 to August 2025, featured three white apartment buildings with colorful interiors meant to mimic \u201cdocumented homes destroyed by weapons manufactured in the United States during airstrikes in Iraq (2015), Syria (2016), and Palestine (2023),\u201d the museum\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cooperhewitt.org\/making-home-access\/floor-2\/1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">website states<\/a>. The buildings reflect \u201con the experiences of three individuals whose homes were destroyed by domicide \u2014 the widespread and systematic destruction of housing due to military conflict, urban development, or social upheaval.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The museum claims the exhibit exists to question the \u201ccomplex role of the United States \u2026  as the leading financial contributor to United Nations peacekeeping initiatives, but also the world\u2019s largest producer of arms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mona Chalabi, the exhibit\u2019s creator, is a far-left Iraqi-British journalist. In her new book, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penguinrandomhouse.com\/books\/676680\/ten-lives-by-mona-chalabi\/?utm_source=ig&#038;utm_medium=social&#038;utm_content=link_in_bio&#038;fbclid=PAZXh0bgNhZW0CMTEAc3J0YwZhcHBfaWQPOTM2NjE5NzQzMzkyNDU5AAGnNiVura5N7yF2fOnbvyPrnyCbsAZGbw_NIHqIONIyHHBmgr_P-yQz9MtMbFg_aem_JKvGUvLIpOQfXnYBrvpoEQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Ten Lives<\/em><\/a>, she addresses the financial situations of ten people and the \u201clack of [money] in America.\u201d Chalabi also headed a four-part \u201csex education\u201d series for The Guardian called \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/maeryan.com\/work\/vagina-dispatches\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vagina Dispatches<\/a>,\u201d which featured a man identifying as a woman. Chalabi has numerous posts on Instagram saying that Israel is engaging in intentional genocide of Palestinians. She also believes that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DFVoBtEOBNY\/?img_index=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">tripartite U.S. government system is \u201cfascist<\/a>.\u201d Another Chalabi post lists all the countries America has purportedly \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DB9TopduLNd\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">interfered in elections<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The OIG report <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oversight.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/reports\/2026-07\/OIG-E-26-01_0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> that various museum-goers felt alarmed by the exhibit and \u201cexpressed concerns that the exhibit provided a national platform for political activism, lacked balance of perspectives, and editorially omitted broader context.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Shurat HaDin Law Center <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jpost.com\/diaspora\/antisemitism\/article-853247\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stated<\/a> that the exhibit \u201cpromotes a narrative sympathetic to terrorism and detrimental to U.S. interests\u201d because it aligns with \u201cpro-Hamas messaging\u201d and \u201cfalse claims that \u2018U.S.-backed Israeli operations deliberately targeted civilian homes.\u2019\u201d The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/anti-sex-trafficking-advocates-slam-twitter-on-heels-of-bombshell-lawsuit-from-teen-victim\/\" title=\"Anti-Sex Trafficking Advocates Slam Twitter On Heels Of Bombshell Lawsuit From Teen Victim\">law center<\/a> also argues that the exhibit omits the context of the Hamas Oct. 7 attack on Israeli homes and citizens, which was \u201cdomicide that prompted Israel\u2019s military response.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The museum seemed to ignore these complaints until after the OIG investigation. Only months before the investigation, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oversight.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/documents\/reports\/2026-07\/OIG-E-26-01_0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">director of the museum faced another visitor complaint <\/a>because of the exhibit for \u201ca bias against America and Israel and editorially omitted context, complexity, and sensitivity to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/teacher-targets-college-student-because-she-works-for-conservative-radio-station-student-says\/\" title=\"Teacher Targets College Student Because She Works For Conservative Radio Station, Student Says\">multiple viewpoints<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Central Smithsonian management and the Under Secretary for Museums and Culture decided to install a \u201ctrigger warning\u201d plaque to placate guests, but they installed it \u201cnear the entrance to the museum, one floor below the exhibit.\u201d It was so small that during the OIG investigation, personnel had difficulty finding it. Furthermore, the plaque only contained a message stating that \u201cviews expressed by these artists and designers are their own.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The OIG investigation also found that the $36,500 used for the Patterns of Life exhibit wrongfully came from the American Women\u2019s History Initiative Pool fund. AWHIP requires that its funds go to programs that \u201cresearch, share, and amplify the histories of American women,\u201d which the Patterns of Life exhibit does not do. \u201cCooper Hewitt used federal funds from the American Women\u2019s History Initiative pool without notifying fund administrators that the exhibit no longer had the nexus to American women\u2019s history as initially proposed,\u201d the OIG report noted.<\/p>\n<p>The OIG\u2019s \u201ccase study\u201d investigation revealed an ineffective implementation of Smithsonian Directive 603 (SD 603) \u2014 a policy that governs the Smithsonian museum body that aims to create \u201cbalanced perspectives within the content while preserving creative independence.\u201d The SD 603 Committee \u201cfunctions informally without defined authority and procedures to review content and make recommendations,\u201d the report found, leading to confusion and lack of oversight. Inadequate time devoted to meetings during the review process and failure to document the content and conclusions of the meetings that were held also contributed to the flawed vetting of the exhibit.<\/p>\n<p>The Smithsonian\u2019s tepid application of SD 603 led to an environment where review standards could be mainly determined by the subjective whims of the personnel at the Cooper Hewitt. The OIG office found that \u201ca number of Smithsonian personnel, including directors, did not understand that they had obligations under SD 603 and that the policy applied to their content. \u2026 There seemed to be a lack of uniform awareness that the Smithsonian had specific standards around content.\u201d Even though SD 603 requires a balance of perspectives present in any exhibit, the policy failed to \u201cprovide guidance regarding \u2026 what it means to have a reasonable balance of perspectives.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>To right the wrongs of the Smithsonian oversight in the Patterns of Life Hewitt exhibit, the OIG proposed seven changes to SD 603 to make the exhibit-approving process more rigorous and documented.
