The Democratic establishment thought it could manage the socialist Left. Now the socialist Left is trying to manage the Democratic establishment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Klink argues the movement\u2019s recent victories say more about where they occurred than whether they can be replicated nationally.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-16\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-2\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWhat wins a Democratic primary in Brooklyn can lose a House seat in Bucks County, Macomb County, or suburban Phoenix,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe DSA is a winning message in deep-blue cities where the Democratic primary is effectively the election,\u201d Klink said. \u201cIt is a liability in swing states, where ordinary voters still care about taxes, public safety, energy costs, and whether government can handle the basics. Democratic socialism travels well on college campuses and in activist-heavy urban districts. It travels poorly in the suburbs of Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Arizona, Nevada, and Georgia. The problem for Democrats is that DSA candidates don\u2019t just move the party left. They shift the conversation away from affordability and competence and toward ideology.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not everyone agrees the New York results foreshadow trouble for Democrats.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-17\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-3\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">James Christopher, who worked on former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo\u2019s New York City mayoral campaign and on Assembly races against DSA-backed candidates, said the recent victories should not be mistaken for a national road map.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe real distinction is between progressive policy and ideological branding,\u201d Christopher told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cVoters may support tenant protections, higher wages, stronger healthcare access, corporate accountability, and more affordable housing, but that does not mean they want every race nationalized around the DSA label.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He argued Democrats can embrace economic populism without adopting socialism as the party\u2019s identity.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-4\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-4\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-25\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-4\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe strongest Democratic message is not to attack the Left or run away from working people\u2019s concerns,\u201d Christopher said. \u201cIt is to be disciplined enough to fight for those concerns without handing Republicans a weapon.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignright size-large is-resized\">Detroit, Michigan, Senator Bernie Sanders held a rally at a Detroit high school as part of his \u2018Fighting Oligarchy\u2019 campaign. (Jim West\/UCG\/Universal Images Group via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blake Ashby, founder of the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.redstatedemocrats.org\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.redstatedemocrats.org\/\">Red State Democrats project<\/a> and author of <em>Socialism and the Democratic Party<\/em>, said the DSA\u2019s rise reflects genuine economic anxiety, particularly among younger voters, but cautioned against assuming that translates into electoral success in politically competitive states.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ashby argued that many younger voters use the word \u201csocialism\u201d as shorthand for affordability, economic security, and greater corporate accountability rather than government ownership of industry. Democrats, he said, risk misreading that sentiment if they conclude moving further left is the answer. Instead, he believes a modernized version of the Franklin D. (Selcuk Acar \/Anadolu via Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cRepublicans have been looking for a boogeyman all cycle, and they may have finally found one,\u201d Republican strategist Jeff Burton, a former senior National Republican Congressional Committee official, told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cDemocrats are making it easier for Republicans to define socialism as the public face of today\u2019s Democratic Party.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Burton argued that while socialist candidates can thrive in heavily Democratic districts, the branding could prove costly in the states that will decide control of Congress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe political map that elects a democratic socialist in New York City is not the political map that decides Michigan, Georgia, Maine, or Alaska,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added that branding could become as important as individual candidates.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cDemocrats spent months after 2024 searching for an identity after voters rejected their message,\u201d he said. \u201cIf the loudest voices in the party now belong to the democratic socialist movement, they\u2019ve found an identity. It\u2019s just the wrong one for lasting electoral success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/4626775\/socialists-success-anti-establishment-strategy\/\" type=\"post\" id=\"4626775\">SOCIALISTS SEE SUCCESS BY ABANDONING ANTI-TRUMP MESSAGING FOR ANTI-ESTABLISHMENT STRATEGY<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Javier Palomarez, founder and CEO of the United States Hispanic Business Council, said polling of Hispanic business owners suggests voters remain focused on affordability above ideology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOur polling has been remarkably consistent,\u201d Palomarez told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cNearly 70% cite the cost of living as the country\u2019s top issue, and more than two-thirds say they don\u2019t feel represented at the federal level.
