In Suozzi\u2019s seat, the swing has been especially pronounced. In 2020, former President Joe Biden won the seat by 55% to Trump\u2019s 44%. Four years later, Trump got 51% of the vote to former Vice President Kamala Harris\u2019s 47%.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s a tough district to hold if you\u2019re a Democrat, and it\u2019s a tough district to hold if you\u2019re a Republican,\u201d Jim Kessler from Third Way told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cIt is a true swing district.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kessler argued Suozzi has always been a \u201cDemocratic loyalist\u201d and his recent criticism of socialism is about more than just the politics of his district.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe has always looked out for what he believes is in the best interests of the Democratic Party, because he believes that Democrats have the best ideas for America, and you know, he sees the party veering off course,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-17\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-3\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suozzi has represented New York\u2019s 3rd Congressional District since February 2024, when he won a special election to replace expelled GOP Rep. George Santos. He previously represented the district from 2017 to 2023 before leaving to mount an unsuccessful Democratic primary challenge against Gov. Kathy Hochul (D-NY).<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suozzi won the 2024 special election, in part, by running against Biden\u2019s handling of the border crisis. On the campaign trail, Suozzi pledged to work with Republicans to secure the border in a bipartisan fashion. After winning, Suozzi voted for the Laken Riley Act, which <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >requires federal law enforcement<\/a> to detain illegal immigrants charged or convicted of a crime until they can be deported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cHe\u2019s always been someone who is, you know, has had the confidence to speak his mind and to say what he believes and say the obvious, even though a lot of times politicians avoid the obvious,\u201d said Kessler.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-4\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-4\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-25\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-4\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republicans, however, are betting that distancing himself from socialism won\u2019t be enough. They argue the Democratic Party has become the primary vehicle for advancing socialist ideas, making Suozzi inseparable from its leftward drift in the eyes of voters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Former state Assemblyman Mike LiPetri, the GOP nominee against Suozzi in November, told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> that socialists have a \u201cchokehold on the Democrat Party.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe residents of NY-03 are smart \u2013 they see through the phoniness, they see that as the socialist takeover continues to spread that our common-sense Long Island values will be at threat,\u201d said LiPetri. \u201cRepublicans are focused on lowering costs and deliver safe and secure communities while Suozzi and [Kathy] Hochul are selling us out and bending the knee to their far-left.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-26\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-5\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LiPetri has labeled his opponent \u201cTwo-Faced,\u201d pointing to Suozzi\u2019s past support for the \u201cGreen New Deal\u201d \u2014 a climate proposal embraced by many progressives and socialists \u2014 as evidence that the incumbent\u2019s rhetoric is at odds with his record.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Whether Suozzi\u2019s effort to separate himself from the party\u2019s left flank succeeds could have implications beyond Long Island. Suozzi\u2019s strategy reflects a broader debate among Democrats over how to respond as socialists expand their influence in <a election of the mayor and these more recent members of Congress, were often, it was often dismissed as a New York phenomenon, but it\u2019s clearly not,\u201d Smikle Jr. said. \u201cThe [New York City] mayor, the Democratic nominee for mayor in Washington, D.C., the wins in Colorado, have suggested that DSA is not going to go anywhere, but there\u2019s still places where moderate and conservative Democrats are going to win.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kessler echoed that sentiment, saying what voters are looking for in primary candidates is \u201cless ideological\u201d and more that they are \u201clooking for a fighter who is authentic and is for reform.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cYou don\u2019t have to parrot the ridiculous talking points of the democratic socialists,\u201d Kessler said. \u201cYou can be yourself, but you\u2019ve got to be out there fighting hard, because you know there\u2019s a political storm out there right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republicans contend Suozzi\u2019s effort to distinguish himself from the Democratic Party\u2019s socialist wing is little more than political \u201centirely performative,\u201d arguing Suozzi\u2019s anti-socialist messaging amounts to little more than political \u201cvirtue signaling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cTom Suozzi can say whatever he wants because he\u2019s two-faced Tom,\u201d Dunleavy told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cHe\u2019ll say that he rejects this kind of rhetoric, but he won\u2019t
