What better way to celebrate Independence Day than by observing and conserving American stories featuring the good, true, and beautiful (that is, actually artistic cinematography)?<\/p>\n<p>Make sure you have the tissues for this one. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0036868\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Best Years of Our Lives<\/em><\/a>  (1946) follows a group of WWII veterans who return home from fighting overseas and must readjust to family and civilian life. The film <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Best_Years_of_Our_Lives\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">portrays<\/a> the hardships and permanent wounds faced by many veterans upon their return to the home front.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0034862\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Holiday Inn<\/em><\/a>  (1942), starring Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire, already made it into my <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/12\/26\/the-best-classic-movies-and-t-v-to-watch-with-your-family-this-post-christmas-week\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Christmas-themed movie guide<\/a>, but when the plot of a film literally centers around an inn open only on holidays, that means it\u2019s appropriate all year round. Astaire\u2019s famous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=WCLoX5HGiw8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">firecracker tap-dance routine<\/a> alone makes this movie an Independence Day must-watch.<\/p>\n<p>For the Alfred Hitchcock fan, <em>North by Northwest<\/em> starring Cary Grant has it all \u2014 mistaken identity, romance, an airplane chase, and Mt. Rushmore! As IMDb <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0053125\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">summarizes<\/a> it, the movie follows an advertising executive who \u201cgoes on the run after being mistaken for a government agent by a group of foreign spies.\u201d Fun fact: The movie features a foot chase across Mt. Rushmore, and Hitchcock <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/americanexperience\/features\/rushmore-hitchcock\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> he had \u201cwanted Cary Grant to hide in Lincoln\u2019s nostril and then have a fit of sneezing.\u201d Although such a scene is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/2019\/06\/north-by-northwest-hitchcock-movie-classic-60th-anniversary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">not in the final version<\/a> of the movie, screenwriter Ernest Lehman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/wgbh\/americanexperience\/features\/rushmore-hitchcock\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">titled<\/a> his initial drafts \u201cThe Man in Lincoln\u2019s Nose.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<p>I have yet to see Frank Capra\u2019s <em>Mr. Smith Goes to Washington<\/em> (1939), but the classic starring James Stewart comes highly recommended. The story <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0031679\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">centers on<\/a> a \u201cnaive youth leader\u201d who quickly encounters corruption and sabotage after being nominated to fill a U.S. Senate vacancy.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of James Stewart, he also plays Charles Lindbergh in <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0051003\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Spirit of St. Louis<\/a><\/em>  (1957), which captures the pilot\u2019s historic transatlantic flight. <\/p>\n<p>Don Knotts is an American treasure. While the Fourth of July is the perfect time to enjoy a Western, if you\u2019re looking for something more family-friendly than <em>Tombstone<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0063591\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>The Shakiest Gun in the West<\/em><\/a>  (1968) and <em>The Apple Dumpling Gang<\/em> (1975) \u2014 both starring Knotts \u2014 are two comedies perfect for kids and parents alike. The former tells the story of a dentist from the East Coast who hops on a wagon train and unknowingly gets tied up in a plot to bust a group of smugglers. In the latter, Knotts and comedian Tim Conway play \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/video\/vi378258201\/?ref_=tt_vids_vi_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the West\u2019s worst bank robbers<\/a>,\u201d who attempt to <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Apple_Dumpling_Gang_(film)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">get their hands on gold<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/millions-of-americans-observe-presidents-day\/\" title=\"Millions of Americans observe President...s Day\">late 1870s<\/a>. Whether you\u2019re looking for a John Hughes classic or a killer soundtrack, the \u201980s called and they have what you need. (Note that most of these are probably a bit intense for younger viewers.)<\/p>\n<p>The original <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0092099\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Top Gun<\/a><\/em>  (1986), followed by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt1745960\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">recent sequel<\/a>. Need I say more? <\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re looking for another movie featuring aeronautics and American grit, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0086197\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Right Stuff<\/a><\/em>  (1983) comes highly rated by my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/this-is-just-a-nightmare-surrogate-babies-are-stuck-in-ukraine\/\" title=\"\u2018This Is Just A Nightmare...: Surrogate Babies Are Stuck In Ukraine\">male family members<\/a>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/tv.apple.com\/br\/movie\/the-right-stuff\/umc.cmc.3nijyu80v8esd7fiheczoymhf?l=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">movie<\/a> \u201cchronicles the first 15 years of America\u2019s space program,\u201d and also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=136LmEmKCRo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">highlights<\/a> Chuck Yeager\u2019s historic flight that broke the sound barrier in the Bell X-1. Note: If you live in the northern Virginia or D.C. area, you won\u2019t regret making a trip to the National Air and Space Museum\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/airandspace.si.edu\/visit\/udvar-hazy-center\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center<\/a> in Chantilly, where you can see Yeager\u2019s Bell X-1, nicknamed the \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/airandspace.si.edu\/collection-objects\/bell-x-1\/nasm_A19510007000\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Glamorous Glennis<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<p>The <em>Rocky<\/em> franchise is another that needs no introduction, but <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0089927\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rocky IV<\/a><\/em>  (1985) specifically would be perfect to put on this weekend. Amid our Marxist-ridden culture, Rocky Balboa\u2019s Cold War fight against Soviet Union boxer Ivan Drago is a much-needed reminder that American exceptionalism will always be superior to communist conformity. And James Brown\u2019s over-the-top performance of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=97AX7paIyuc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Living in America<\/a>\u201d in the movie is, of course, an added bonus.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking of fighting the commies, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0087985\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Red Dawn<\/a><\/em>  (1984), starring C. Thomas Howell and Patrick Swayze, follows a group of Western American teens as they band together to defend their hometown from invading Soviet forces.<\/p>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0102685\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Point Break<\/a><\/em>  (1991), also starring Swayze, follows an FBI agent attempting to bust a group of surfers he <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Point_Break\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">suspects<\/a> to be an infamous bank-robbing gang known as \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/varsitydesmoines.com\/movies\/point-break-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Ex-Presidents<\/a>.\u201d This movie is not technically from the \u201980s, but Ronald Reagan does make an appearance \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ATwq8-f0dMk\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sort of<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Looking for something a little more light-hearted? John Hughes\u2019 <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0095253\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Great Outdoors<\/a><\/em>  (1988), starring John Candy, is a classic \u201980s comedy, great for summertime viewing. A <em>Back to the Future<\/em> marathon or a few episodes of <em>Magnum, P.I.<\/em> are also fail-proof options for a dose of \u201980s Americana.<\/p>\n<h2>Summer Sing-Alongs<\/h2>\n<p>Tired of the <em>Hamilton<\/em> soundtrack? So am I. Give these classic musicals a try instead. <\/p>\n<p>You may have thought it an impossible task to turn the happenings of the Continental Congress into a comedic musical, but <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0068156\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">1776<\/a><\/em>  would prove you wrong. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=09A6oY5cb0I\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">musical numbers<\/a> are pleasantly witty, humorous, historical, and genuinely creative \u2014 a stark contrast to many modern Broadway-esque movies and performances.<\/p>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0047472\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Seven Brides for Seven Brothers<\/em><\/a>  is about a group of backwoods brothers in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seven_Brides_for_Seven_Brothers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">19th-century Oregon<\/a> who want to get married. So naturally, each brother kidnaps the woman he likes from the nearby town. The women, ultimately trapped at the brothers\u2019 homestead for the winter thanks to an avalanche, greatly protest \u2014 but not for long. (<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0048445\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Oklahoma!<\/a><\/em>  is also a good choice if you\u2019re looking for another classic set in the pioneer days of America.)<\/p>\n<p><em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0045152\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Singin\u2019 in the Rain<\/a><\/em>  (1952) and <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0039431\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Good News<\/a><\/em>  (1947) are both set in 1920s America. The former is about a silent movie actor (Gene Kelley) and his changing career as Hollywood adjusts to \u201ctalking\u201d films. The <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Good_News_(musical)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">latter<\/a> follows the drama among a group of college students, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0039431\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">honing<\/a> in on the story of a football star \u201cwho falls in love with his French tutor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Maybe you are looking for a break from screens this weekend, but still want to get into that \u201976 spirit. Spotify has plenty of America-250-themed playlists. Or you could curate your own!
