Real headlines in the news this week:<\/p>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<p>The effort to ban registered sex offenders from running for office began with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/after-latest-arrest-its-clear-that-drag-queen-story-hour-is-a-haven-for-child-predators\/\" title=\"After Latest Arrest, It...s Clear That \u2018Drag Queen Story Hour... Is A Haven For Child Predators\">registered sex offender<\/a> in Fresno proudly announcing his campaign for city council. Rene Campos kicked off his campaign with a <a href=\"https:\/\/abc30.com\/post\/fresno-school-reacts-registered-sex-offender-rene-campos-hosting-press-conference-campus\/18669757\/\">press conference<\/a> across the street from a school, forcing Californians to notice that he <em>could<\/em> run for office. Here\u2019s his profile on the Megan\u2019s Law website:<\/p>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<p>Assemblywoman <a href=\"https:\/\/soria.asmdc.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Esmeralda Soria<\/a>, a Democrat who represents Fresno, promptly introduced a bill to bar all registered sex offenders from running for office, and the California Assembly passed <a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billVotesClient.xhtml?bill_id=202520260AB2753\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AB 2753<\/a> in May. Sixty legislators voted for the bill in the lower house, and twenty declined to vote, but no one voted against it.<\/p>\n<p>Then it reached the California Senate, where Scott Wiener <a href=\"https:\/\/selc.senate.ca.gov\/members\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">chairs<\/a> the elections committee. If you don\u2019t know who Scott Wiener is, this image will begin to tell you how the story ends.<\/p>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<p>Wiener, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2026-primary-elections\/california-us-house-district-11-results\">leading candidate<\/a> for the seat in the House currently held by the retiring Nancy Pelosi, has a long history of <a href=\"https:\/\/sd11.senate.ca.gov\/news\/senator-wiener-introduces-legislation-end-discrimination-against-lgbt-people-regarding-sex\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">legislating to protect<\/a> adults who <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/realSonjaShaw\/status\/1940419209588298123\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">have \u201coral and anal intercourse\u201d with minors<\/a> and expressing pride in California\u2019s commitment to the <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Scott_Wiener\/status\/1484560885364396036\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sexual liberation<\/a> of young children.<\/p>\n<p>In a committee hearing this week, Wiener steered a maneuver to kill Soria\u2019s bill, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=jPZQDnrjcxc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pronouncing it<\/a> unfair and dangerous. In a democracy, Wiener told an interviewer, people get to run for office, even people with \u201ca lot of flaws.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<div lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p>Despite a push to stop it, registered sex offenders and people convicted of sex crimes against children will still be able to run for and hold public office in California.<\/p>\n<p>Two bills that unanimously passed the CA Assembly earlier this year hit a snag in the CA Senate today: <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/rN7GlgCjYm\">pic.twitter.com\/rN7GlgCjYm<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u2014 Ashley Zavala (@ZavalaA) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ZavalaA\/status\/2072162912874226177?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">July 1, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span> <\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>But the same committee did vote to advance a bill from another Democrat in the Assembly, the relentlessly dull-minded Dawn Addis, that also proposed to forbid registered sex offenders from running for office. The difference between the bill from Soria that was killed and the bill from Addis that was advanced: The bill from Addis, <a href=\"https:\/\/leginfo.legislature.ca.gov\/faces\/billNavClient.xhtml?bill_id=202520260AB2691\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">AB 2691<\/a>, only covers people added to the sex offender registry for sex crimes against <em>adult<\/em> victims, explicitly excluding convictions related to sections of the penal code that refer to the sexual assault of minors:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>(B) \u201cSexual assault\u201d does not include a violation of subdivision (b) of Section 286, subdivision (b) of Section 287, or subdivision (h) or (i) of Section 289 of the Penal Code.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Greg Burt, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.californiafamily.org\/greg-burt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vice president<\/a> at the California Family Council, spoke as a witness at the hearing and blasted the exclusion of sex crimes against children from Addis\u2019 bill. Today is one of those days.<\/p>\n<p>The Senate Elections Committee rejected a bill that would have prohibited registered sex offenders from running for elected office in California. Another bill would have barred individuals convicted of\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/QPzNPZtiQj\">pic.twitter.com\/QPzNPZtiQj<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>\u2014 Assemblyman Tri Ta (@TriTa4CA) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TriTa4CA\/status\/2072102110435684368?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">June 30, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><\/span> <\/p>\n<\/figure>\n<p>Celebrating the death of the bill that would have prevented him from (unsuccessfully) running for office, Campos <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/07\/01\/us-news\/registered-sex-offender-celebrates-failure-of-california-bill-to-bar-him-from-office\/?utm_medium=social&#038;utm_campaign=capost&#038;utm_source=twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">told journalists<\/a> that the legislature had delivered a victory for constitutional values: \u201cThe First Amendment does not belong to the comfortable.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>This is at least the third time in recent years that California Democrats have fought to kill a bill that would have harmed the interests of adults who sexually assault minors. Here\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kcra.com\/article\/california-lawmakers-block-ab-379-sex-trafficking\/64614165\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">headline<\/a> from 2025 about <a href=\"https:\/\/krell.asmdc.org\/sites\/a06.asmdc.org\/files\/2025-02\/AB%20379%20(Krell)%20-%20Human%20Trafficking%20Fact%20Sheet%20-%20Final.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">another bill<\/a> written by a Democrat:<\/p>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<p>Democrats were eventually shamed into <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courthousenews.com\/california-solicitation-bill-passes-final-hurdle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">passing that bill<\/a>, abandoning their effort to kill it.<\/p>\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.capradio.org\/articles\/2023\/07\/13\/why-california-assembly-democrats-blocked-a-child-trafficking-bill-and-why-they-reversed-course\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">similar story<\/a> played out two years before that:<\/p>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<p>It\u2019s becoming a <em>seasonal event<\/em> in the California legislature, as bills to harm pedophiles appear and Democrats rush to smother them.
