If you\u2019re an internet user and politics junkie of a certain age, you don\u2019t even have to search far in your mental database to retrieve the author of that gem.<\/p>\n<p>In the waning days of the 2016 presidential campaign, Hillary Rodham Clinton \u2014 or at least some poor comms staffer who\u2019s been working her way from barista to Starbucks district manager in the decade hence \u2014 was so confident she was going to win that she patted herself on the back thusly:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Happy birthday to this future president. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/JT3HiBjYdj\">pic.twitter.com\/JT3HiBjYdj<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Hillary Clinton (@HillaryClinton) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/HillaryClinton\/status\/791263939015376902?\">October 26, 2016<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>She was a bit belated in her well-wishing; Donald Trump\u2019s birthday is June 14, not Oct. 26.<\/p>\n<p>Whatever the case, the (yes, kids, they were once upon a time called that, and geezers like me \u2014 who miss the days when IRC, not Discord, was the group chat app of choice \u2014 will still always call them that) crystallized Clinton\u2019s reputation as someone who could put her digital foot further in her digital mouth than she could IRL.<\/p>\n<p>Considering this was a woman who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/hillary-clinton-defends-infamous-deplorables-comment-takes-even\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">could put size-16 Doc Martens in her maw <em>without<\/em> a smartphone<\/a>, that\u2019s some impressive gaffing game on the socials.<\/p>\n<p>Some 10 years later, she thinks that she still has it.<\/p>\n<p>As you may have heard three or so news cycles ago, social media was all a-twitter over the fact that Vice President J.D. Vance made a visit to the Richard Nixon Presidential Library and Museum in California, quipping that Watergate would be \u201clike a 12-hour news story\u201d if it occurred today.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think Nixon\u2019s historical legacy is enjoying a bit of a renaissance, and deservedly so,\u201d Vance said. \u201cI joked that if Watergate happened tomorrow, it would be like a 12 hours news story. The idea that it took down a presidency is crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">JD Vance: \u201cI think Nixon\u2019s historical legacy is enjoying a bit of a renaissance, and deservedly so. I joked that if Watergate happened tomorrow, it would be like a 12 hours news story. Vance. I\u2019ve always liked Richard Nixon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Anyhow, jokes are never jokes to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/06\/26\/us\/politics\/vance-nixon-watergate-deep-state.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The New York Times<\/a>, a paper that should have changed its motto from \u201cAll the News That\u2019s Fit to Print\u201d to \u201cThat\u2019s NOT Funny\u201d sometime in the 2010s. It ended up with this headline: \u201cVance Downplays Watergate and Compares Himself to Nixon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>That Thursday story should have been the most pearl-clutching reaction to this, but Hillary Clinton apparently owns herself a lot of pearls and believes clutching is great exercise. This managed to both miss <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/watch-jd-vance-hilarious-note-protesters-yelling-foreign-language\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Vance\u2019s<\/a> jokes, but also be wrong in several different ways.<\/p>\n<p>First: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/desantis-administration-sets-record-straight-pink-attacks-florida-banned-books-publicity-stunt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Which books have been banned<\/a> by Donald Trump\u2019s administration or other Republicans? Which book can\u2019t you buy? And which book specifically about the Nixon administration or Watergate? But in 2008, a reporter named Dan Calabrese wrote an article that claimed that \u201cwhen the investigation was over, Zeifman fired Hillary from the committee staff and refused to give her a letter of recommendation.\u201d The article quoted Zeifman as saying: \u201cShe was a liar. She was an unethical, dishonest lawyer. She conspired to violate the Constitution, the rules of the House, the rules of the committee and the rules of confidentiality.\u201d \u2026<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>There is no actual quote from Zeifman saying he fired her. Moreover, in other interviews, Zeifman acknowledged that he did not fire Clinton. In 1999, nine years before the Calabrese interview, Zeifman told the Scripps-Howard news agency: \u201cIf I had the power to fire her, I would have fired her.\u201d In a 2008 interview on \u201cThe Neal Boortz Show,\u201d Zeifman was asked directly whether he fired her. His answer: \u201cWell, let me put it this way. I terminated her, along with some other staff members who were \u2014 we no longer needed, and advised her that I would not \u2014 could not recommend her for any further positions.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>But perhaps the most important point on the matter was made by National Review\u2019s Dan McLaughlin, who noted \u2014 or \u201cpounced upon,\u201d given that he\u2019s a conservative \u2014 Clinton\u2019s quote, \u201cThe difference between Watergate and now is that back then, Republicans actually did something about a law-breaking president.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf only we could find the people who started this whole thing of a national party closing ranks behind a president who committed felonies in office,\u201d McLaughlin wrote, while posting a popular meme from Netflix\u2019s \u201cI Think You Should Leave with Tim Robinson\u201d regarding a sketch where everyone\u2019s trying to find out who crashed a car shaped like a hot dog.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">If only we could find the people who started this whole thing of a national party closing ranks behind a president who committed felonies in office. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/eQVjKhapWQ\">https:\/\/t.co\/eQVjKhapWQ<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ZE8s3j9ZBD\">pic.twitter.com\/ZE8s3j9ZBD<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Dan McLaughlin (@baseballcrank) <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/baseballcrank\/status\/2071003963562897905?\">June 27, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>Yeah \u2014 which party was that? Which party decided that you could lie to the American people, commit perjury and obstruction of justice, and get away with it?<\/p>\n<p>And more critically, who was married to the person who committed those offenses and got impeached for them?<\/p>\n<p>Maybe the Starr Report is the only book the Trump administration has banned, because therein you\u2019ll find the answer.<\/p>\n<p>Of course, neither of Trump\u2019s impeachments involved actual perjury or obstruction of justice, unlike former <a href=\"https:\/\/www.westernjournal.com\/prosecutor-responsible-clintons-impeachment-died-age-76\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">President Bill Clinton\u2019s<\/a> did when it came down to whether he had sexual relations with that woman, Miss Lewinsky.<\/p>\n<p>In that way, she should welcome the idea that maybe we\u2019re looking at Nixon\u2019s presidency a bit differently, probably because she and her husband believed that lying under oath and encouraging others to do the same over an affair with an intern should be treated as a 12-hour news story. Same with running an  server with classified information on it out of your home.<\/p>\n<p>Congratulations, though, Hillary.
