The Democratic candidate, Graham Platner, who appeals more to college-educated whites, is narrowly leading incumbent Republican Susan Collins, but faces challenges with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/two-arrogant-pricks-walk-into-the-white-house\/\" title=\"Two Arrogant Pricks Walk Into the White House\u2026\">working-class white voters<\/a>, among whom Collins remains dominant. Historically, safer Democratic candidates have lost to Collins, and Platner&#8217;s support largely comes from higher-educated demographics rather than the working class, where he underperforms. Janet Mills (D-ME) and other possible candidates, and safer, more conventional Democrats have repeatedly lost to Collins, including the heavily favored Sara Gideon in 2020.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-1\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-1\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-15\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-1\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"article-paywall\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not only does the <em>New York Times<\/em>\u2013<em>Portland Press Herald<\/em>-Siena poll show Platner <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4628288\/maine-senate-race-polling-tight-platner-collins-abortion\/\">just barely ahead<\/a> of Collins with 49% to the incumbent\u2019s 47%. It also reveals that Platner is badly underperforming with working-class white voters.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Collins is trouncing Platner among whites without college degrees by 59% to 36%. In the same pollster\u2019s findings in September 2020, Collins led Gideon by just 3 points with this demographic, 48% to 45%. Collins trailed Gideon by 5 points overall but won by just under 9 points in November.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Platner\u2019s actual source of strength is college-educated whites. He is winning this increasingly Democratic voting bloc with 68% of the vote to Collins\u2019s 31%. In September 2020, Gideon\u2019s advantage with college-educated white voters was 57% to Collins\u2019s 37%.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-16\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-2\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">College-educated white people are the reason Platner has a lead over Collins at all, however narrow. He has yet to demonstrate any real strength with the working-class voters he was supposed to lead back to the Democratic Party.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Platner has been <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/daily-memo\/4603116\/time-to-see-graham-platner-sexts-maine-senate-race\/\">hammered<\/a> by a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4597477\/four-scandal-maine-senate-candidate-graham-platner\/\">series of scandals<\/a><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4604292\/graham-platner-maine-senate-vetting-naomi-lim\/\">  unique to his candidacy<\/a>, but the working-class struggles may apply to other socialists running for office.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New York City Mayor <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/zohran-mamdani\/\">Zohran Mamdani<\/a> <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/politics\/3466932\/how-zohran-mamdani-won-collapse-patriotism\/\">didn\u2019t rack up his biggest wins<\/a> in working-class precincts last year. He had a strong appeal to educated, perhaps downwardly mobile but still relatively affluent voters.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-17\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-3\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mamdani won 46% of voters with an associate degree (which was a plurality in the three-way race), 57% with a bachelor\u2019s degree, and 57% with an advanced degree. This included 53% of college-educated whites and 64% of nonwhite voters with college degrees, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/election\/2025\/exit-polls\/new-york-city\/general\/mayor\/0\">according to<\/a> exit polls.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Former Gov. Andrew Cuomo won a 47% plurality of voters without a college degree, including 58% of noncollege whites. He lost nonwhite voters without college degrees by just 9 points.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Cuomo actually beat Mamdani among voters making less than $30,000 a year. Mamdani won most other income groups, but his biggest majorities earned between $50,000 to $99,000 (56%) and $100,00 to $199,000 (55%). Mamdani did better with voters making over $50,000 (52%) than under $50,000 (48%, just a 4-point margin over Cuomo).<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-4\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-4\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-25\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-4\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">New York is expensive enough that even some of the higher-income voters could be considered economically beleaguered, but the class implications of Mamdani\u2019s win are not overwhelmingly clear.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mamdani did make inroads in the general election with minority voters compared to the Democratic primary, in which he also faced Cuomo. He also attracted younger and newer voters, including some who sat out the 2024 presidential election or <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/cbs-news-analysis-the-voters-mamdani-added-to-the-democratic-coalition-in-new-york\/\">declined to back<\/a> former Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democratic nominee.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Mamdani-endorsed socialists who <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4622291\/a-big-night-for-mamdani-as-socialists-keep-winning-democratic-primaries\/\">won Democratic primaries <\/a>this year may lean into identity politics more than the mayor did in his successful campaign, compounding working-class problems.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap wex-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\" style=\"min-height:90px\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" hidden>Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-26\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-5\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Socialists and other progressives have argued that Democrats keep losing to President <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\">Donald Trump<\/a> because they have abandoned the working class.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think it\u2019s important for us to focus on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/democrats-offer-little-support-as-platner-faces-new-controversy\/\" title=\"Democrats offer little support as Platner faces new controversy\">issues facing working families<\/a> a little bit more than Graham Platner\u2019s marriage,\u201d Sen. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/bernie-sanders\/\">Bernie Sanders<\/a> (I-VT) said when reporters asked him about Platner\u2019s sexting scandal. The <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/premium\/4603940\/bernie-sanders-reshape-democratic-party-his-image\/\">socialist heavyweight<\/a> has also declared his endorsed candidates are \u201cwilling to stand up for working people\u201d and \u201care taking on the establishment and WINNING.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When Trump won his second term, Rep. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/alexandria-ocasio-cortez\/\">Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez<\/a> (D-NY) said Democrats \u201cneed to be a party of brawlers for the working class.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Democrats\u2019 supposedly working-class-coded vice presidential pick, Gov. Tim Walz (D-MN), didn\u2019t move the needle with those voters, and the Harris-led ticket was heavily dependent on college-educated whites.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/campaigns\/congressional\/4626998\/how-socialists-took-over-democratic-party\/\"><strong>HOW SOCIALISTS TOOK OVER THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY <\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Platner, who still leads Collins by 4 points in the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolling.com\/polls\/senate\/general\/2026\/maine\/collins-vs-platner\"><em>RealClearPolitics <\/em>polling average<\/a>, may have similar problems against a Republican with a history of outrunning her polling.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Even if Platner wins, it may be due to political polarization, Trump\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/david-m-drucker-trump-got-little-love-at-gop-24-kickoff-from-a-party-sick-of-losing\/\" title=\"David M.
