The court rejected the Republican national Committee’s argument that federal law requires ballots to be received by election day, stating that election laws specify when voters must cast ballots, not when states must receive them. Conservative critics, including Senator eric Schmitt and commentators like Megyn Kelly, expressed disappointment, claiming the decision threatens election integrity by permitting late mail-in ballots. The ruling sparked internal division within the court, with Justice Samuel Alito dissenting sharply, warning it could undermine election security and increase voter fraud risks. Justice barrett defended the decision, emphasizing that voter choice is finalized when voting concludes, not upon ballot receipt, and maintained that public criticism should not influence judicial duties. The decision marks a contentious point in the broader debate over election laws and voting procedures, illustrating the deep political and ideological divides surrounding electoral processes in the United States.

Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett is once again facing fierce backlash from President Donald Trump’s political base after joining Chief Justice John Roberts and the court’s three liberal justices on Monday in a ruling that dealt a setback to Republican efforts to prevent states from counting mail-in ballots that arrive days or weeks after election night.

The 5-4 decision in Watson v.
