These initiatives require voter approval through two ballot measures, which include allowing mid-decade redistricting and permitting the use of a temporary, partisan map untill new maps are created after the next census. These measures are under legal scrutiny, as Republicans have filed a lawsuit to block them, leading to a delay of over 50 days in the Colorado Supreme Court’s decision.Supporters argue the delay hampers democratic processes and voter rights, while opponents contend the court’s timeline is typical. The measures need approximately 125,000 signatures to qualify for the November ballot. This move in Colorado follows similar redistricting actions in California, where voters approved Proposition 50 to adjust districts in response to Texas’s redrawing of its own districts to favor Republicans. Democrats are pushing these changes as a response to ongoing gerrymandering tactics and political strategies in othre states.

Democrats spearheading a gerrymandering effort in Colorado ahead of the 2028 elections are worrying that any delay by the state supreme court in ruling on the validity of their ballot measures may hamper the push.

Colorado Democrats hope to establish up to three new Democratic-favoring congressional districts ahead of 2028, according to The New York Times.
