Though he frequently referred to the then-candidate as a \u201ccommunist\u201d during the 2025 campaign, the president hosted the younger politician at the White House in late November of last year. The pair has reportedly maintained contact in the ensuing months and has largely avoided escalating any tension in their working relationship.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That hasn\u2019t stopped Republicans from casting Mamdani as a socialist foil to the GOP\u2019s self-claimed commonsense economic platform. Republican National Committee officials told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> they\u2019d been suggesting even before Mamdani\u2019s win last year that his influence would be the \u201ckiss of death\u201d for Democrats in the midterm elections and that they would rather face socialist candidates in the general than centrist Democrats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Republicans ran with those themes on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap\" style=\"min-height:5px;\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" style=\"display:none;\">Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-16\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-2\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), speaking to reporters at a press conference, declared that the New York results show Mamdani, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), and Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) have \u201ctaken full control of the Democratic Party, or what was left of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThere are mini Mamdanis popping up all around the country,\u201d he said. \u201cIt is a dangerous thing. This is not a joke. These radical candidates are self-describing, they\u2019re self-identifying as Marxist. It\u2019s not going to work this time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Still, even a unified, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/liberal-survey-gop-populism-beats-democrats-latino-identity-politics\/\" title=\"Liberal Survey: GOP Populism Beats ...&#039; Latino Identity Politics\">anti-socialist message<\/a> may fail to cut through affordability concerns, especially with the president and Republican lawmakers beefing over the final legislative sprint ahead of November.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-5\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap\" style=\"min-height:5px;\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" style=\"display:none;\">Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-26\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-5\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump further worsened the divide between the White House and the Hill Wednesday morning by <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/policy\/finance-and-economy\/4622719\/trump-cancels-major-housing-bill-signing-demand-save-act\/\">canceling<\/a> a planned signing ceremony for the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act, a bipartisan bill aimed at lowering housing costs that the president had also backed himself.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, even as housing costs remain a top concern for midterm voters, the president declared the bill would be put on ice until the Senate passes the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/save-act\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"22939\">SAVE America Act<\/a>, Trump\u2019s favored election integrity act that Republican leaders say doesn\u2019t have the votes to move through the upper chamber.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some sitting Democrats sought to downplay Tuesday\u2019s socialist wave as an aberration, suggesting to the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> Wednesday that the DSA would not resonate with voters in battleground states or in general elections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT), a progressive and the deputy secretary of the Democratic Caucus, said that Tuesday was a \u201cNew York story more than anything else\u201d but admitted that voters \u201care clearly telling us they want us to be bolder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI don\u2019t want to bend over backwards to extrapolate too much based off of one state\u2019s elections,\u201d he told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cObviously, in New York, the mayor and [Ocasio-Cortez] have enormous power inside the Democratic Party today. I\u2019m not sure that election would reproduce itself, those results would reproduce themselves in every other state. But, yeah, I think you\u2019d be silly not to read something into yesterday\u2019s results.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Randy Jones, a senior Democratic operative and the political director for Andrew Yang\u2019s 2020 Democratic presidential primary run, told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> that it\u2019s \u201cabsolutely a mistake\u201d for Trump and Republicans to lean into socialism attacks, noting it didn\u2019t dent Mamdani\u2019s rise last year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe poll numbers and the reality that they face will force them to change tactics,\u201d he said in an interview. \u201cSo they\u2019re either lying or they\u2019re delusional, one of the two.
