Talarico has praised figures like Robyn Henderson-Espinoza, a transgender theologian, and advocates for \u201ctransing religion\u201d to dismantle binary logic.<\/p>\n<p>He has also shown hostility toward Texas legislation restricting transgender youth, framing such laws as harmful, and has used scripture to justify progressive policies. Talarico\u2019s approach seeks to politicize Christianity, depicting Jesus as a socialist and aiming to leverage moral language to shift cultural values toward leftist, life-affirming ideologies. The candidate <a href=\"https:\/\/www.listennotes.com\/podcasts\/activist-theology\/navigating-love-legislature-ms2IdMyqwre\/#google_vignette\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> a lot of striking things on the program from March 2021, most of it more Marxist than mysterious. <\/p>\n<h2>\u2018Transing Religion\u2019 <\/h2>\n<p>Espinoza, formerly known as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mccormick.edu\/adjunct-faculty\/robyn-henderson-espinoza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Robyn Henderson-Espinoza<\/a> identifies as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Body-Becoming-Path-Our-Liberation\/dp\/1506473571\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201cnonbinary, transgender, Latinx theologian on the autistic spectrum.\u201d<\/a> The Ordained Baptist previously taught \u201cQueer Theory and Theology,\u201d \u201cIntroduction to Christian Social Ethics,\u201d \u201cThe Ethics of Liberation,\u201d and \u201cQueer Theory and Religious Ethics\u201d at Duke Divinity School, <a href=\"https:\/\/divinity.duke.edu\/faculty\/roberto-che-espinoza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to<\/a> her bio. <\/p>\n<p>The trans activist once wrote a <a href=\"https:\/\/muse.jhu.edu\/pub\/3\/article\/690612\/pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">paper<\/a> for the Journal of Feminist Studies in Religion titled, \u201cTransing Religion: Moving Beyond the Logic of the (Hetero)Norm of Binaries.\u201d In it, she proposed \u201ctransing religion\u00a0as one approach to methodologically dismantle the logic of the norm that grounds the reproduction of binarisms and theologies of complementarity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Espinoza once delivered a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=T71fjuEEvw0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">sermon<\/a> (in a \u201cBlack Lives Matter\u201d vest) declaring the Bible is \u201ctrans-positive.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow might we embrace the language of the writer of Genesis in that the earth being a formless void and mobilize darkness in the face of the deep as part of the creative process that is trans-inclusive and trans-positive,\u201d Espinoza asked.<\/p>\n<p>In fighting against a Texas bill that requires schools notify parents if their child tells a school official that he or she is trans, Espinoza <a href=\"https:\/\/religiondispatches.org\/2017\/05\/15\/heart-texas-aint-hateful-open-letter-lawmakers-texan-trans-queer-latinx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">warned<\/a> that young trans queers living in Texas like she was \u201ccan be outed to their parents at will\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Talarico confessed that when Espinoza followed him on Twitter, he \u201ccouldn\u2019t contain\u201d his \u201cinner fan boy.\u201d Espinoza\u2019s book, the Senate candidate said, inspired him and, in an affected Texas accent, added that \u201cy\u2019all\u2019s work continues to inspire me.\u201d <\/p>\n<figure>\n<p><span><\/p>\n<blockquote data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Dr. Henderson-Espinoza!! The author, according to the Amazon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Body-Becoming-Path-Our-Liberation\/dp\/1506473571\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">blurb<\/a>, \u201cinhabits is a nonbinary body, a trans body, a body in two races \u2014 and a body continually in discovery. While sin plagues all institutions of man, it\u2019s unlikely that a significant percentage of Texas Christians \u201chate Christianity.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Yet Talarico, at least in March 2021, was stuck. In the 2021 podcast, he told the hosts that he just couldn\u2019t quit Christianity. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd I always get drawn back into it because nowhere else, in no other political philosophy, in no other economic theory, do I find anything as truly radical or revolutionary as the teachings of that barefoot Rabbi,\u201d Talarico told Espinoza and co-host <a href=\"https:\/\/newschannel9.com\/news\/local\/chattanooga-pastor-fired-for-officiating-same-sex-wedding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Rev. Anna Golladay<\/a>, who in <a href=\"https:\/\/newschannel9.com\/news\/local\/chattanooga-pastor-fired-for-officiating-same-sex-wedding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">2018<\/a> lost her associate pastoral position at Chattanooga, Tennessee, United Methodist churches for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.umnews.org\/en\/news\/local-pastor-loses-license-for-officiating-at-same-sex-wedding\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">officiating a gay wedding.<\/a>  <\/p>\n<p>Golladay is running a <a href=\"https:\/\/19thnews.org\/2026\/04\/women-clergy-faith-democrats-congress-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">long-shot campaign <\/a>to unseat longtime Tennessee 3rd Congressional District Rep. Chuck Fleischmann. President Donald Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2024-elections\/tennessee-president-results\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">won<\/a> the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/kari-lakes-election-challenge-continues-to-move-forward\/\" title=\"Kari Lake\u2019s Election Challenge Continues to Move Forward\">ruby red district<\/a> by more than 35 percentage points in 2024. <\/p>\n<p>Talarico draws from the same intellectual well as Golladay and Espinoza, steeped in a kind of critical race theory Christianity. <\/p>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<p> <a href=\"https:\/\/divinity.duke.edu\/faculty\/roberto-che-espinoza\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Roberto Che Henderson-Espinoza<\/a> Source: Youtube<\/p>\n<p>In the podcast, Talarico praised his longtime minister, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.staopen.org\/staffandleadership\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jim Rigby,<\/a> head of the progressive flock at St. Andrew\u2019s Presbyterian Church in Austin for more than 35 years. Rigby, who, according to the church <a href=\"https:\/\/www.staopen.org\/staffandleadership\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">website,<\/a> has a \u201clove of world religions and a passion for social justice,\u201d was \u201cproudly part of a Christian anarchist tradition,\u201d Talarico said on the podcast. <\/p>\n<p>He said his mentor paid a heavy price early on for his liberal interpretation of the Bible. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow I look back and understand what kind of risks he was taking with his own career,\u201d the Democrat said, describing Rigby as a \u201ctrue white traitor.\u201d Sounds like an insult. It\u2019s not in Marxist land. <\/p>\n<p>Being a <a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/scholar_lookup?title=Race+Traitor&#038;author=N+Ignatiev&#038;author=J+Garvey&#038;publication_year=1996&#038;\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201crace traitor,\u201d<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/news\/postscript\/noel-ignatievs-long-fight-against-whiteness\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">according to<\/a> the now-dead communist who peddled the divisive ideology, is the call not only to abolish so-called \u201cwhite privilege\u201d, but the act of \u201cabolishing whiteness.\u201d All part of the far left\u2019s \u2014 aka modern Democrat Party \u2014 \u201ccommitment to class struggle.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>In other words, it\u2019s insanity. Charles Manson <a href=\"https:\/\/www.history.com\/articles\/charles-manson-helter-skelter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Helter Skelter<\/a> philosophy. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe philosophers have merely interpreted the white race; the point, however, is to abolish it. How can this be done?\u201d the Boston Review\u2019s Mike King <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonreview.net\/articles\/demand-the-impossible\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">pondered<\/a> in a memorial piece on his hero, <a href=\"https:\/\/communemag.com\/noel-ignatiev-1940-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Noel Ignatiev<\/a>. The formerly alive Marxist professor at Harvard and champion of critical race theory <a href=\"https:\/\/www.harvardmagazine.com\/2002\/09\/abolish-the-white-race.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claimed<\/a> that \u201ctreason to whiteness is loyalty to humanity.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>\u2018Christianity can be Powerful\u2019<\/h2>\n<p>Talarico is a disciple of this radical school of thought. He confessed his white privilege sins to Golladay and Espinoza, that his imagination is \u201climited by his own background and identity.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy whiteness and my masculinity, all of those things limit my imagination about what\u2019s possible,\u201d the man who wants to be Texas\u2019 next senator said. <\/p>\n<p>One thing became crystal clear in the podcast: Talarico wants to commandeer Christianity to preach the old failed faith of Marxism. He wants to make Christ into Karl Marx so that he can <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/nrsc-blasts-gallego-and-sinema-as-deadbeat-dad-and-liberal-democrat-in-new-ad\/\" title=\"NRSC blasts Gallego and Sinema as &#039;deadbeat dad&#039; and &#039;liberal Democrat&#039; in new ad\">push radical leftist policies<\/a> should he be elected to higher office. And he wants to use the Gospel \u2014 at least his version of it \u2014 to reach Christian voters. <\/p>\n<p>Christianity is the vehicle for rising leftist power in America, he said. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe reason I think Christianity can be powerful in our context in this country is because so many of our political opponents share that kind of, that tradition,\u201d Talarico said, calling Jesus Christ a socialist. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s very strange every time I think about it, that the most popular figure in our country, particularly on the conservative right, is this socialist anarchist from Palestine,\u201d he said. <\/p>\n<p>Like any good Marxist, Talarico knows the power is rooted in language \u2014 control of what he calls the \u201cmoral language.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Success on that front, he predicted, will begin to shift the culture \u201ctoward something that\u2019s more life-affirming, life-enhancing, life-furthering.\u201d The \u201cpeople with functioning hearts\u201d \u2014 leftists like himself \u2014 have a \u201cmoral obligation\u201d to be the force behind that shift, Talarico said.  <\/p>\n<p>That sounds political, not Christian.
