His decision follows increasing pressure from Labor ministers and a decisive by-election victory by Andy Burnham, seen as a strong alternative to Starmer’s leadership. starmer announced he would step down after stating he is no longer the best leader for the party and plans to remain as Prime Minister until a new Labour leader is elected, which could happen as soon as July or September.

Starmer reflected on his achievements, including a important Labour victory in 2024,but faced setbacks such as a major electoral defeat in May 2026,losing numerous seats and control in Wales and Scotland. His support had plummeted over the past year, partly due to failure to improve the economy and handling of key issues like rising antisemitism linked to Middle Eastern conflicts.

Controversies, notably the Mandelson Epstein scandal involving allegations of improper conduct and security vetting, further damaged his reputation, causing demands for his resignation from within his party and opposition figures alike. His tenure was also marred by public frustration over political instability and the lack of a clear mandate, along with economic challenges exacerbated by global conflicts.

Reform UK leader Nigel Farage called for a general election, criticizing the frequent leadership changes and the erosion of democratic processes. Meanwhile, the Labour Party faces an uncertain future with potential leadership changes, aiming to recover before the next <a href="https://www.conservativenewsdaily.net/breaking-news/sarah-palin-should-blame-lisa-murkowski-for-her-special-election-loss/" title="Sarah Palin Should Blame Lisa Murkowski For Her Special ... It lost control of Wales after a century in power, and saw its worst turnout yet in the Scottish elections.

By May 11, more than 60 Labour MPs called upon Starmer to resign. Four Parliamentary Private Secretaries, junior members of the government, resigned and used the opportunity to call upon Starmer to step down.
