Proposed by Councilman Hugo Soto-Martinez, the initiative seeks to permit noncitizens such as Legal Permanent Residents, individuals with Temporary Protected Status, and DACA recipients to participate in local elections, although details about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/blackburn-questions-veterans-affairs-over-illegal-immigrant-use-of-agency-resources\/\" title=\"Blackburn queries VA on unauthorized immigrant utilization of agency resources\">verifying citizenship status<\/a> at the polls remain unclear. Despite widespread claims that there is no evidence of <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >large-scale noncitizen voting affecting elections<\/a>, some city governments like Los Angeles, New York, and Washington, D.C., are progressing toward <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/gop-senators-hold-the-line-on-for-the-people-act\/\" title=\"GOP senators hold the line on For the People Act\">granting voting rights<\/a> to noncitizens. This development exposes a broader ideological stance among Democrats that citizenship should not be a strict requirement for voting, fueling debates over federal efforts like the SAVE America Act, which mandates proof of citizenship for voter registration. Critics argue that these actions reflect a disregard for the importance of citizenship and election security.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The Los Angeles City Council voted Wednesday to put the question of whether noncitizens can vote in city elections on the ballot this November.<\/p>\n<p>The proposal, introduced by Councilman Hugo Soto-Martinez (<a href=\"https:\/\/californiaglobe.com\/articles\/la-city-council-socialists-launch-bid-to-give-noncitizens-full-voting-rights-in-local-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">the son of illegal aliens<\/a>), asks voters to let noncitizens vote in city and Los Angeles Unified District elections, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/abc7.com\/post\/measure-give-noncitizens-vote-los-angeles-city-elections-approved-nov-3-ballot\/19322190\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ABC7<\/a>. Soto-Martinez reportedly said individuals with Temporary Protected Status, permanent legal residents, and DACA recipients would benefit from the proposal, though it\u2019s unclear what mechanisms \u2014 if any \u2014 would be in place to differentiate between illegal and legal noncitizens at the voting booth.<\/p>\n<p>Yet for years, Americans who worried about noncitizen voting were told that concern was merely a fever dream. In fact, the propaganda press insisted throughout the 2024 election and beyond that there was no movement to expand voting rights to noncitizens and no reason for the adoption of measures securing elections from noncitizens because there was no reason to suspect Democrats would be comfortable with noncitizen voting.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/transcripts\/nx-s1-5147790\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NPR<\/a> reporter Jude Joffe-Block dismissed concerns about noncitizens, asserting there was no evidence of \u201ca plot to get recent border crossers to vote.\u201d On a separate occasion, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.northcountrypublicradio.org\/news\/npr\/nx-s1-5147789\/6-facts-about-false-noncitizen-voting-claims-and-the-election\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Joffe-Block <\/a>described Republican warnings that Democrats were allowing an open border to usher in alien voters \u201ca false narrative.\u201d <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/web.archive.org\/web\/20241116191243\/https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2024-election\/trump-election-results-2024-noncitizens-voting-big-lie-rcna175552\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">NBC<\/a> News ran a October 2024 story headlined: \u2018Big lie\u2019 2.0: How Trump\u2019s false claims about noncitizens voting lay the groundwork to undermine the election.\u201d The article mocked concerns about \u201ca problem that doesn\u2019t exist: a leftist plot to \u2018get the illegals to become voters.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Last year <a href=\"https:\/\/www.factcheck.org\/2025\/04\/musks-unsupported-claim-to-have-unveiled-massive-illegal-voting-by-noncitizens\/?utm_source=flipboard&#038;utm_content=topic\/politics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">FactCheck<\/a> wrote a piece criticizing Elon Musk and DOGE for claiming \u201cto have unearthed evidence to prove a longstanding conspiracy theory about Democrats orchestrating illegal voting by noncitizens on a scale large enough to swing national elections in their favor. But voting experts say the claims are highly dubious, and DOGE hasn\u2019t released any evidence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Just this past February, <a href=\"https:\/\/nymag.com\/intelligencer\/article\/the-gop-is-panicking-over-noncitizen-voting-its-imaginary.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">New York Magazine<\/a> published a piece by Ed Kilgore titled: \u201cThe GOP Is Panicking Over Noncitizen Voting. It\u2019s Imaginary.\u201d The piece described the issue as a \u201cphantom menace\u201d and a \u201cfoundational myth\u201d within \u201cMAGA circles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Los Angeles is now proving exactly why many Americans never found these assurances convincing. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/washington-dc-council-chair-denies-capital-is-facing-a-crime-crisis\/\" title=\"Washington DC Council Chair Denies Capital Is Facing a Crime Crisis\">city leaders claim<\/a> this proposition applies only to legal noncitizens. But that misses the point: For years Democrats and the media told Americans they were conspiracy theorists for thinking Democrats wanted <em>any <\/em>noncitizens voting. Now one of the largest cities is asking voters to give noncitizens that right.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/03\/18\/22-times-democrats-invited-noncitizens-to-vote-in-u-s-elections\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">In fact<\/a>, New York City Democrats have fought to permit 800,000 noncitizens to vote in local elections, while the Washington, D.C., Board of Elections tried to preserve a district law permitting noncitizens to vote. In other words, for Democrats, the argument has already shifted from whether noncitizens should be allowed to vote at all to <em>which<\/em> noncitizens should be allowed to vote.<\/p>\n<p>It also reveals the deeper problem: The left doesn\u2019t think citizenship is a meaningful prerequisite to vote.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, what\u2019s happening in Los Angeles (and what\u2019s happened in other municipalities across the country) explains why Democrats have fought so hard against the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) America Act, which would require documentary proof of citizenship to register to vote in federal elections.<\/p>\n<p>Democrats object to the SAVE America Act because Democrats find noncitizen voting acceptable. Why else would Los Angeles Democrats approve a proposition to let noncitizens vote? Why did New York City or Washington, D.C., fight to let noncitizens vote? If local Democrat officials are comfortable extending voting rights to noncitizens at a local level, it\u2019s hard to pretend that the national party has some deeply held principle at work when they oppose the SAVE Act.<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>      Brianna Lyman is an elections correspondent at The Federalist.
