This decision was met with criticism from initiatives like REPAIR and some Republican voices who argue the move was cowardly and neglects the state’s need to reform discriminatory maps. House Speaker Jon Burns claimed the delay was in the “Georgia way” of doing things responsibly, but critics see it as a fearful reaction motivated by electoral concerns, notably the potential for increased Democratic turnout. The decision contradicts the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Louisiana v.callais, which aimed to prevent race-based district drawing under the Voting Rights Act. Democrats dismissed the Republican stance as racially motivated, calling for voters to replace them in upcoming elections. While other states like Alabama, Florida, Louisiana, and Tennessee are actively redrawing their maps in accordance with the court, Georgia’s inaction is seen as surrendering to racial activists and maintaining the status quo of discriminatory districts, which critics argue only benefits political and racial interests rather than justice or fair portrayal.

The Republican-controlled Georgia General Assembly didn’t merely abandon its plans for redrawing racially-gerrymandered congressional districts, it did so to the applause of radical leftists. They did so despite Georgia Gov. Some Georgia Republicans feared redistricting in an election year could backfire, driving Democrat turnout in competitive races, the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

So, Burns and crew apparently don’t feel an urgent need to fix long-standing discrimination in Georgia’s political maps.
