Following a court order to restore these items, the administration discussed efforts to comply, including a list of 57 items they removed, such as signs, exhibits, and junior ranger books. These items, like exhibits on climate change, Native American history, and references to slavery, were removed because they were viewed as politicized or distorting history, focusing on race and climate issues, which the administration argued was an attempt to reframe history away from patriotic themes.

U.S. District Judge Angel Kelley, appointed by President Biden, condemned these removals, citing a campaign to erase history and undermine science, and ordered the courts to ensure the materials were restored. The Biden-appointed judge also criticized the administration for censorship and sanitization, emphasizing concerns over altering historical narratives at national sites.

The Trump administration vowed to appeal the ruling, arguing that the changes aimed to present a more balanced view of U.S. history, removing content that presented a modern, progressive perspective. This dispute is part of a broader debate over how history is curated at national sites, with related cases involving other exhibits and signs. The DOJ contends that their actions are about curating content that best fits each site rather than erasing history, and similar legal battles are ongoing.

The Trump administration detailed to a federal court on Wednesday the signs and exhibits it removed from properties run by the National Park Service that it said “inappropriately disparage Americans,” after a judge ordered those items to be restored to the NPS properties last week.

U.S. District Judge Angel Kelley, a nominee of former President Joe Biden, ordered the administration to restore the items removed from NPS properties in accordance with President Donald Trump’s 2025 executive order meant to reverse the “corrosive ideology” promoted by the Biden administration at NPS properties.
