If a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/2022-man-of-the-year-keith-olbermann\/\" title=\"2022 Man of the Year: Keith Olbermann\">society starts treating<\/a> every culture as equal and beyond criticism, then eventually you have to police speech \u2014 and apparently, Europe has decided to do just that. <\/p>\n<p>French influencer Tha\u00efs d\u2019Escufon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lefigaro.fr\/faits-divers\/thais-d-escufon-ex-porte-parole-de-generation-identitaire-agressee-a-son-domicile-20211209\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">was allegedly assaulted<\/a> in 2021 by a North African migrant who \u2014 according to d\u2019Escufon \u2014 \u201cpresent[ed] himself as Tunisian.\u201d Two years after the alleged assault, d\u2019Escufon said the <a href=\"https:\/\/fr.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tha\u00efs_d'Escufon\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">main danger<\/a> to women in France are \u201cBlack African and Arab men.\u201d She <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/ThaisEscufon\/status\/2066885051929755753\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a> Tuesday that she is \u201cfacing an unsuspended prison sentence for my comments about the danger posed by immigrant men in France.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"fdrlst__b89e9-3538431533\" class=\"d-flex justify-content-center fdrlst__b89e9-paragraph-2 fdrlst__b89e9-entity-placement\">\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-1463670073398-0\" class=\"mb-30\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>It matters naught whether you agree with her argument (though it should be noted that migrant rape gangs in particular have been <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/06\/03\/the-murder-of-henry-nowak-shows-the-lefts-deadly-obsession-with-racism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">victimizing Europeans<\/a> for years now). What\u2019s important is whether people are allowed to criticize other cultures and immigration policy without potentially being tossed into the slammer.<\/p>\n<p>This wouldn\u2019t be the first time that Europe has punished people for free speech because they condemned the impact of multiculturalism. Eric Zemmour, a candidate for France\u2019s presidential elections in 2022, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/01\/17\/world\/europe\/eric-zemmour-convicted-racial-hate.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">was found guilty<\/a> in 2016 for charges related to inciting racial discrimination when he said France had been the victim of an \u201cinvasion\u201d of Muslims.<\/p>\n<p>An Austrian woman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/calling-prophet-muhammad-a-pedophile-does-not-fall-within-freedom-of-speech-european-court\/a-46050749\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">was convicted<\/a> in 2018 for calling the prophet Muhammed a pedophile. The woman was convicted for disparaging religion.<\/p>\n<p>In fact, a member of Germany\u2019s Alternative for Germany (AfD) <a href=\"https:\/\/thecritic.co.uk\/fined-over-facts\/\">party w<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/thecritic.co.uk\/fined-over-facts\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">as convicted<\/a> for incitement to hatred for using statistics (that were not disputed) to claim Afghan migrants were responsible for a disproportionate amount of sexual violence against women.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s an outcome that conservatives have warned about for decades. <\/p>\n<p>In a 2008 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.creators.com\/read\/pat-buchanan\/06\/08\/return-of-the-censors\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">column<\/a>, Pat Buchanan warned: \u201cCanada\u2019s commitment to multiculturalism and the equality of all religions, races and cultures requires the silencing of those who do not believe all races, creed and cultures are equal. The dogmas of the Diverse Society dictate that the cherished rights of the Free Society be sacrificed on the altar of social tranquility.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cToday, the true believers in Islam and the true believers in diversity uber alles are making common cause against those who believe in freedom of speech and the press,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wnd.com\/2008\/06\/67299\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Buchanan wrote<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Mark Steyn <a href=\"https:\/\/www.steynonline.com\/4409\/gagging-us-softly\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote<\/a> in National Review on multiculturalism: \u201cIt was precisely at the moment when no axes were being ground that the West decided it could afford to <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >forgo free speech \u2026 advanced social democracies<\/a> were heading inevitably down a one-way sunlit avenue into the peaceable kingdom of multiculturalism \u2014 and so it seemed \u2026 reasonable to introduce speech codes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A free society allows people to say things that some may find offensive. But in a society determined to be multicultural, eventually speech that is deemed to be offensive, insensitive, or (as is the case in the UK), \u201cracially charged\u201d toward the multiple cultures is deemed unlawful.<\/p>\n<p>But <em>no<\/em> multicultural society is worth losing a right to freedom of expression.<\/p>\n<p>For decades the left has increasingly promised that a more diverse society would make Western nations stronger while preserving the same freedoms, rights, and cultural mores that made those nations so attractive to migrants in the first place. But if a multicultural society requires prosecuting citizens for discussing crime, threats, culture, and immigration, then there was a tradeoff and lack of preservation.<\/p>\n<p>And if being a multicultural society requires criminalizing politically inconvenient speech, then a multicultural society is incompatible with free society.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"wp-block-separator\">\n<div class=\"article-author-description fst-italic\">      Brianna Lyman is an elections correspondent at The Federalist.
