target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/07\/us\/politics\/trump-iran-war.html\">widely reported <\/a>to be the most skeptical top administration official about launching the war.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-1\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap\" style=\"min-height:5px;\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" \u201cVance deal,\u201d though it is not always intended as a compliment.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The opportunity for Vance, who is still the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.realclearpolling.com\/polls\/president\/republican-primary\/2028\/national\">front-runner<\/a> for the 2028 Republican presidential nomination, is that ending the war, opening the Strait of Hormuz, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/4601571\/inflation-rose-may-highest-three-years-iran-energy-prices\/\">easing energy prices<\/a>, and shifting the focus back to domestic issues is what\u2019s best for the GOP in this year\u2019s elections and the next one two years from now.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But in the meantime, the initial deal is not popular with vast swathes of the Republican Party, who are comparing it unfavorably to former President <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/barack-obama\/\">Barack Obama<\/a>\u2019s more than a decade ago. (Trump memorably pulled out of that Iran deal during his first term.) The <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/daily-memo\/4609840\/fog-of-iran-mou\/\">halting public rollout of the memorandum<\/a>, while attributed to allies\u2019 preferences, gave the unmistakable impression that the administration knew it would not be received well, at least in certain circles.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-2\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap\" style=\"min-height:5px;\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" style=\"display:none;\">Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-16\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-2\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/4612945\/trump-jd-vance-iran-peace-deal\/\">jokingly summed up<\/a> Vance\u2019s dilemma well. \u201cThis way, if it works out, I\u2019m going to take the credit,\u201d he said at a press conference to the laughter of the crowd. \u201cIf it doesn\u2019t work out, I\u2019m blaming JD. You better be careful, JD. He\u2019s going to turn his plane around and get the hell out of here. Yeah, I like that idea. I think it\u2019s a good idea.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While Fox News\u2019s Peter Doocy planted the seed of making Vance the Iran deal fall guy in his question to Trump, this is a big moment for the 41-year-old vice president.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not long after the war started, Rubio seemed to be everywhere promoting it, just as he had been by Trump\u2019s side after U.S. forces captured Venezuelan strongman Nicolas Maduro. This is despite reports that Rubio was himself skeptical the Iranian regime would fall and instead thought the best the war could accomplish was degrading Tehran\u2019s military capacity, which became a major part of his talking points in favor of the operation.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-3\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap\" style=\"min-height:5px;\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" style=\"display:none;\">Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-17\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-3\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">All of this led to an uptick in speculation that Rubio could emerge as a rival for the 2028 nomination, even though he has repeatedly expressed support for Vance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Vance was more often deployed to talk about the economy, investigating fraud in government programs, and to <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/daily-memo\/4499580\/midterm-elections-vance-economy-voters-war\/\">reassure voters <\/a>that the war would not turn into a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/daily-memo\/4478016\/trump-forever-wars-iraq-syndrome-iran-strikes\/\">lengthy, Iraq-like quagmire<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI think one big difference \u2026 is that we have a smart president, whereas in the past we\u2019ve had dumb presidents,\u201d Vance told a reporter in March. \u201cAnd I trust President Trump to get the job done, to do a good job for the American people, and to make sure that the mistakes of the past aren\u2019t repeated.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-inarticle-ad wex-inarticle-ad-art-dsk-inart-4\">\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap\" style=\"min-height:5px;\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" style=\"display:none;\">Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-25\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-4\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Now Vance is everywhere and Rubio, the nation\u2019s chief diplomat, looks sidelined. It is a chance for the Marine Corps veteran of the Iraq War to burnish his credentials as a future commander in chief.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It comes as Vance is clearly trying to reassemble the coalition that elected Trump, which came under strain both because of the war and lingering <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/inflation\/\">inflation <\/a>concerns. His book <em>Communion<\/em> is about his Catholic faith, though he was careful to make it accessible to evangelicals. He has <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/4609087\/vance-walks-back-childless-cat-ladies-new-book\/\">walked back<\/a> his <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/3YuVZYV\" >infamous \u201cchildless cat ladies\u201d comment<\/a> and appeared on <em>The View<\/em>. He went on Megyn Kelly, who has clashed with Trump over Israel and the Middle East, to promote the Iran deal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But the deal also opens up Vance to <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/opinion\/4612713\/jd-vance-scandalous-excuse-not-showing-text-trump-iran-deal\/\">criticism from hawkish Republicans<\/a>, who will present him as callow and naive. Some mocked his comment about the \u201ccoolest thing\u201d about the Iran talks. There are also concerns about the proxies Iran funds in the region.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At the same time, the war has been broadly unpopular from the beginning, and Republicans receive low marks on the cost of living.
