...s ... ... will differ from 2015 framework\">difficult foreign policy problems<\/a>, the notion that we can just bully our way or bomb our way to solutions may sometimes seem appealing, but the fact of the matter is that taking the time to explore diplomacy and exhaust the possibilities of coming up with deals that don\u2019t solve 100% of the problem but solve 80%, 90% of the problem while avoiding the necessity of going to war,\u201d Obama <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.com\/Politics\/obama-doubtful-iran-deal-past\/story?utm_source=facebook&#038;utm_medium=social&#038;utm_campaign=dhfacebook&#038;utm_content=app.dashsocial.com\/abcnews\/library\/media\/685304677&#038;id=133874150\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He added, \u201cYou\u2019d think we would\u2019ve learned that lesson by now. But it seems like every so often we have to relearn that lesson again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Former Obama State Department veteran Tom Cochran said the timing between the MOU and the library is coincidental, but the Democratic strategist contended it does put the two deals \u201cside by side, and that contrast isn\u2019t [Trump\u2019s] to win.\u201d <\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap\" style=\"min-height:5px;\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" style=\"display:none;\">Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-16\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-2\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe mess we\u2019ve been in for months now says more than anything else,\u201d Cochran told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Some experts pumped the brakes on jumping to comparisons, however.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Regarding Trump\u2019s MOU, Brookings Institution foreign policy senior fellow Robert Einhorn, an adviser in Obama\u2019s State Department, told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em> in an email that \u201cit\u2019s too early to make intelligent comparisons between Obama\u2019s JCPOA and Trump\u2019s still-uncertain negotiating outcome.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap\" style=\"min-height:5px;\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" style=\"display:none;\">Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-17\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-3\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Council on Foreign Relations nuclear security senior fellow Erin Dumbacher agreed, although she added that Trump has encouraged comparisons between his and Obama\u2019s deals while promising to deliver a better one than his predecessor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201c[Obama\u2019s] deal took years to negotiate, was highly detailed, and notably brought the relevant parties to the table,\u201d Dumbacher told the <em>Washington Examiner<\/em>. \u201cThe \u2018joint\u2019 aspect of the deal refers to the involvement of Russia, China, and European states to make sure Iran\u2019s nuclear program would be peaceful. Each country then had a stake in the outcome.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIn addition to lack of clarity in this deal around the restrictions on uranium enrichment or the status of any remaining fissile material in Iran, to mention just two key items, it seems other relevant parties in this war \u2014 namely Israel \u2014 are not engaged at this stage of negotiations,\u201d she said. \u201cThat means Israel could become a spoiler to the MOU\u2019s sustainability as a framework for future negotiations with Iran about nuclear or other matters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump, who is in Evian, France, for the G7 leaders summit, punctuated that point on Tuesday when he criticized Israeli Prime Minister <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/benjamin-netanyahu\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"378\">Benjamin Netanyahu<\/a> for his strikes against <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/hezbollah\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"814\">Hezbollah<\/a> in <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/lebanon\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"1192\">Lebanon<\/a>, including Sunday\u2019s operation in Beirut.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Senior Trump administration officials told reporters this week that Lebanon is not part of the deal, but Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Tuesday that Israel\u2019s activities in Lebanon would contravene the MOU.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Also on Tuesday, Trump appeared mindful of the comparison between his and Obama\u2019s respective deals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s a very important document, and, unlike Obama, who could\u2019ve destroyed the Middle East with the horrible JCPOA,\u201d Trump said. \u201cThat was a road to a nuclear weapon. Mine is a wall against a nuclear weapon.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Supporters of Obama have emphasized that the preamble of his deal read, \u201cIran reaffirms that under no circumstances will Iran ever seek, develop, or acquire any nuclear weapons,\u201d though it did permit the regime to have some enriched uranium and included sunset provisions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In response, supporters of Trump have defended the president, including Sen. Bill Hagerty (R-TN).<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThis isn\u2019t at all like the JCPOA,\u201d Hagerty told Fox News. \u201cPresident Obama actually paid for Iranian\u2019s terrorism, he funded it. [President Trump] has put the Iranian nuclear program at the bottom of a mountain. He\u2019s put their navy at the bottom of the sea. He\u2019s terminated their ability to maintain control of their airspace.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump on Tuesday also criticized Obama\u2019s deal for giving \u201cbillions of dollars\u201d to Iran by unfreezing assets and rescinding economic sanctions.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But <a href=\"https:\/\/www.conservativenewsdaily.net\/breaking-news\/breaking-big-here-we-go-pentagon-halts-biden-transition-defense-briefings-biden-team-unaware-of-directive\/\" title=\"BREAKING BIG: Here We Go \u2014 Pentagon Halts Biden Transition Defense Briefings \u2014 Biden Team Unaware of Directive\">senior administration officials<\/a> have confirmed Iran will receive immediate sanctions relief so the regime can sell its oil as long as negotiations continue, could receive \u201cgestures\u201d of other sanctions relief or frozen funds access for reciprocal gestures of compliance, and could receive $300 million for reconstruction if a nuclear deal is reached, with U.S. demands including Iran\u2019s enriched uranium, a regime moratorium on more enrichment, and inspections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pressure is mounting on Trump to disclose details about the MOU, which he electronically signed on Sunday, before the signing ceremony in Geneva, Switzerland, on Friday, including from congressional Republicans such as Senate Majority Leader <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/john-thune\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"178\">John Thune<\/a> (R-SD).<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cUntil the full text of this MOU becomes clear, we will not know if the president and his team were able to negotiate a more robust agreement with Iran than prior U.S. presidents,\u201d Dumbacher said.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Obama\u2019s 2015 deal placed restrictions on Iran\u2019s nuclear program, including a reduction in the regime\u2019s enriched uranium stockpile and an agreement to International Atomic Energy Agency inspections, in exchange for economic sanctions relief.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump withdrew from Obama\u2019s deal in 2018 because it did not permanently stop Iran\u2019s nuclear program, ballistic missile development, or its use of proxies and terrorism networks to create regional security instability.\u00a0At the moment, neither does Trump\u2019s MOU.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/4609952\/vance-obama-trump-iran-nuclear-deal\/\" type=\"link\" id=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/news\/white-house\/4609952\/vance-obama-trump-iran-nuclear-deal\/\">VANCE HITS BACK AT OBAMA\u2019S CRITICISM OF TRUMP-IRAN DEAL: \u2018THEY HATE THE OBAMA DEAL\u2019<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trump and senior administration officials have indicated the MOU will be disclosed on Wednesday.
