She did not endorse a successor among the two former staffers running for the position. The upcoming primary election on June 16 will determine her replacement, with prominent candidates including Robert White and city councilor Janeese Lewis George, both advocating for increased visibility and progress on issues like D.C. statehood. The race is influenced by ongoing tensions over federal intervention, as former President Trump has suggested the possibility of federal control over the city’s police and governance, prompting strong opposition from Democratic candidates who view such threats as undermining local autonomy. Norton’s departure marks a potential generational change in the role, amid debates about her mental acuity and district concerns over national interference. The primary results, determined through ranked choice voting, are expected in June, with the winner likely to secure the seat in November.

Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton (D-DC) is watching from the sidelines as voters prepare to select a new — and likely more confrontational — delegate for the District of Columbia.

After more than three decades, Norton announced she would not seek reelection to a 19th term as the district’s nonvoting delegate.
