The FDA is now conducting studies on the safety of mifepristone amid ongoing political and legal battles over abortion policies.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"readmore\">\n    <button onclick=\"showReadMore()\" id=\"readmorebtn\">Read more&#8230;<\/button>\n<\/p>\n<hr id=\"line\">\n<span id=\"more\"><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A baby born at just 23 weeks gestation is in the hospital indefinitely after the infant\u2019s grandfather allegedly slipped his teenage daughter an abortion pill that sickened her and resulted in an emergency caesarean section. <\/p>\n<p>The alleged perpetrator, 39 year-old Jamelle Kelly, faces <a href=\"https:\/\/www.katc.com\/lafayette-parish\/carencro-father-charged-with-attempted-feticide-abuse-of-pregnant-daughter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">two felony charges<\/a>, attempted first-degree feticide and domestic abuse\/battery of a pregnant victim, after the Carencro Police Department determined he poisoned his 17 year-old with abortion pills that sent her to the hospital. <\/p>\n<p>Louisiana prohibits both surgical and chemical abortions and classifies mifepristone, the most popular abortion pill on the market, as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/01\/health\/abortion-drugs-louisiana-law\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">controlled dangerous substance<\/a>. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/05\/15\/women-babies-at-risk-after-scotus-authorizes-mail-order-abortion-for-now\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">ongoing mail-order<\/a> abortion scheme, however, has made it possible for people in pro-life states like Louisiana to order mifepristone straight to their doors. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s unclear exactly how Kelly specifically obtained the abortion pills he used on his daughter and grandbaby. What is clear is that the drug, which is only approved for abortions <a href=\"https:\/\/www.accessdata.fda.gov\/drugsatfda_docs\/label\/2016\/020687s020lbl.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">at 10 weeks gestation<\/a> or less, caused the teen mom\u2019s \u201cillness\u201d that required emergency medical intervention.<\/p>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<p>Mifepristone maker Danco Laboratories, the FDA, and <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/05\/28\/study-abortion-lobby-medias-claims-that-mifepristone-is-safer-than-tylenol-are-hogwash\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">corporate media<\/a> insist that pregnancy-ending pills are <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/07\/23\/missouri-ag-sues-planned-parenthood-for-falsely-advertising-dangerous-abortion-drug-as-safe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">safe<\/a>. A 2025 analysis of insurance data, however, found that more than <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/04\/28\/study-rate-of-serious-or-life-threatening-complications-after-abortion-pill-is-22-times-higher-than-fda-claims\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">one in 10 women<\/a> who take mifepristone suffer serious additional complications such as hemorrhage or infection.
