He successfully persuaded former Sen. Sherrod Brown to run in Ohio and former Rep. Mary Peltola to enter the race in Alaska. In <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/iowa\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"468\">Iowa<\/a>, Schumer-backed Democratic nominee, paralympian Josh Turek, emerged from the primary, giving Democrats another potential pickup opportunity.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe try to find candidates who really fit the states, not fit the national Democratic Party, but the states,\u201d Schumer said. \u201cAnd the minute I met Turek, I said, \u2018He\u2019s our guy.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"wex-ad-wrap\" style=\"min-height:5px;\"><span class=\"wex-ad-label\" style=\"display:none;\">Advertisement<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"div-gpt-ad-3182201-17\" data-wex-ad=\"art-dsk-inart-3\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Schumer argued that President <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/donald-trump\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"4\">Donald Trump\u2019s <\/a>tariff policies could create openings in Midwestern states such as Iowa, where farmers have been hurt by lower demand from Trump\u2019s trade disputes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But Democrats are also confronting internal divisions that could complicate their path to a majority.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nowhere is that more evident than in <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/maine\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"193\">Maine<\/a>, where progressive oysterman Graham Platner won the Democratic nomination to challenge incumbent Sen. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/susan-collins\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"1302\">Susan Collins<\/a> (R-ME). Platner, whose Senate bid has been mired in <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/premium\/4601855\/scrambled-senate-playing-field-michigan\/\">scandals<\/a> ranging from sexual misconduct allegations to a tattoo that resembles a Nazi symbol, has campaigned on progressive policies including universal healthcare, wealth redistribution, and a less interventionist foreign policy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">His victory thrilled progressive activists and earned support from Sen. <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/bernie-sanders\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"41\">Bernie Sanders <\/a>(I-VT), Sen.<a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/elizabeth-warren\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"250\"> Elizabeth Warren<\/a> (D-MA), and groups aligned with the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/democratic-socialists-of-america\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"5861\">Democratic Socialists of America<\/a>. Schumer, however, originally backed Planter\u2019s former primary challenger, Gov. Janet Mills (D-ME), until the governor dropped out of the race in April.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Schumer brushed aside questions about controversies surrounding Platner\u2019s candidacy, instead focusing on Collins\u2019 political vulnerabilities.<br \/>\u201cMuch weaker than she was six years ago,\u201d Schumer described the Maine <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/republican\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"926\">Republican<\/a>. While acknowledging policy differences with Platner, Schumer said both share the goal of defeating Collins.
