Reports indicate the U.S. Postal Service (USPS) may <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usatoday.com\/story\/news\/politics\/2026\/03\/06\/usps-out-of-cash-february-2027\/89018831007\/\">run out of money<\/a> by 2027 if nothing changes.<\/p>\n<p>Electric vehicles, especially load-bearing ones that have to travel many miles, cost more, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcmag.com\/news\/the-unexpected-problem-with-evs-they-tire-quickly\">wear out faster<\/a>, are more <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instituteforenergyresearch.org\/renewable\/environmental-impacts-of-lithium-ion-batteries\/\">environmentally hazardous<\/a>, and are <a href=\"https:\/\/engineauditor.com\/how-often-do-electric-cars-need-to-be-charged\/\">less reliable<\/a> than gas-powered trucks. In March 2021, USPS placed an order with Oshkosh to deliver a <a href=\"https:\/\/about.usps.com\/newsroom\/testimony-speeches\/040522-statement-of-next-generation-delivery-vehicle-executive-director-victoria-k-stephen.htm\">minimum<\/a> of 50,000 vehicles, both electric and gas-powered, by 2027. An industry professional tells The Federalist only 15 percent of those vehicles have been delivered as of April. <\/p>\n<p>In 2023, Congress <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2024\/12\/06\/trump-may-cancel-us-postal-service-electric-mail-truck-contract-reuters-sources-say.html?utm_source=chatgpt.com\">directed<\/a> roughly $3 billion in taxpayer funds from the Inflation Reduction Act to USPS to electrify its fleet. According to a November 2024 Washington Post <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2024\/12\/11\/biden-usps-ev-oshkosh-climate\/\">report<\/a>, only 93 out of the expected 3,000 vehicles from that appropriation had been delivered then.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t know how to make a d-mn truck,\u201d one person involved in production <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2024\/12\/11\/biden-usps-ev-oshkosh-climate\/\">told<\/a> the Washington Post. The multi-year upgrade, expected to cost around <a href=\"https:\/\/news.usps.com\/2025\/12\/01\/usps-is-delivering-its-new-fleet\/\">$9.6 billion<\/a>, comes as the USPS rapidly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gao.gov\/blog\/us-postal-service-losing-money-what-can-be-done-help-it\">loses money<\/a> due largely to <a href=\"https:\/\/reason.com\/2021\/07\/11\/the-post-office-pension-ponzi-scheme\/\">pension obligations<\/a> and declining mail volume.\u00a0The net loss for the postal service in 2025 was around <a href=\"https:\/\/about.usps.com\/newsroom\/national-releases\/2025\/1114-usps-reports-fiscal-year-2025-results.htm\">$9 <\/a><span color=\"#2271b1\"><span><u>billion<\/u><\/span><\/span>, causing the\u00a0postmaster general to sound the alarm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am not sure that the American public is aware that the postal service is at a critical juncture,\u201d Postmaster General David Steiner said in a written <a href=\"https:\/\/www.documentcloud.org\/documents\/27885310-pmg-steiner-031726-ogr-gov-ops-hearing-testimony-final\/\">statement<\/a>. Steiner told Congress that, at the current rate, \u201cif we continue to pay our required obligations in the same manner as we have done in recent years, then we will be out of cash in less than 12 months.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The postal service will not be able to deliver mail soon unless Congress provides additional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/03\/17\/nx-s1-5750419\/usps-running-out-of-money-postal-service-david-steiner\">funding<\/a>, according to Steiner. Some officials are more hopeful, but still say the situation is dire. Vice Chairman of the Postal Regulatory Commission Robert Taub <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/us-postal-service-not-expected-run-out-cash-next-year-official-says-2026-06-04\/\">told<\/a> a U.S. house subcommittee that he believes the postal service has several years before running out of money, but that \u201cwe cannot leave it up to the postal service to save itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The USPS has made cuts to increase the time it has before funds run out. The postal service suspended <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/us-postal-service-suspends-non-essential-spending-amid-cash-crunch-2026-05-28\/\">non-essential spending<\/a> on travel, office supplies, and consultants in late May. Still, the costly electric vehicle program continues to run. <\/p>\n<p>Although Trump has promised to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/presidential-actions\/2026\/03\/establishing-the-task-force-to-eliminate-fraud\/\">address<\/a> waste and abuse in the federal government, including the postal service, his administration has not dealt with this program. After Trump was elected to a second term, Reuters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/business\/autos-transportation\/trump-may-cancel-us-postal-service-electric-mail-truck-contract-sources-say-2024-12-06\/\">reported<\/a> the administration was interested in cancelling USPS contracts to build the EV fleet. The Trump administration has decreased EV-related funding in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/02\/07\/nx-s1-5289922\/trump-transportation-department-ev-charging-halt\">other<\/a> areas, but not in this one \u2014 yet. <\/p>\n<p>The Federalist asked the White House if the administration is planning to cancel or rethink this EV program. In response, a White House spokesman said: \u201cPresident Trump pledged to slash waste, fraud, and abuse across the federal government. The Trump administration continues to work with the USPS to most effectively and efficiently deliver for the American people.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>However, the White House did not address the Federalist\u2019s questions. When pressed in a follow-up email to address specific inquiries, the White House did not respond.
