At least,\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0good at\u00a0calculating the current cultural\u00a0vibe quotient\u00a0for\u00a0the modern gay movement he helped launch. Public opinion is now turning against it, and for good reason.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/news.gallup.com\/poll\/710810\/support-lgbtq-issues-remains-down-peak.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Gallup\u2019s recent poll<\/a>\u00a0shows support for the morality\u00a0of gay and lesbian relationships declining among Republicans, Democrats,\u00a0and Independents, returning closer to 2016 numbers after peaking in the early 2020s.\u00a0Over\u00a0the last three years, support for\u00a0gay\u00a0\u201cmarriage\u201d\u00a0declined six points\u00a0among all Americans. Sullivan believes these numbers put his movement back 20 years.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure><\/figure>\n<p>Google\u00a0Trends data\u00a0demonstrates\u00a0\u201cPride Month\u201d\u00a0has been\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/trends.google.com\/explore?q=pride%2520month&#038;date=today%25205-y&#038;geo=US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">consistently declining in interest<\/a>\u00a0over the past six years, in\u00a0the\u00a0United\u00a0States\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/trends.google.com\/explore?q=pride%2520month&#038;date=all&#038;geo=Worldwide\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">worldwide<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sullivan blames one thing:\u00a0\u201cqueer\u00a0overreach.\u201d\u00a0He thinks the\u00a0alphabet\u00a0soup\u00a0movement has gone\u00a0off the rails. This is not a new drumbeat for Sullivan. He\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/andrewsullivan.substack.com\/p\/the-queers-versus-the-homosexuals-cfd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">warned in 2023<\/a> that LGBT had devolved into a\u00a0\u201cnew era\u201d\u00a0of\u00a0\u201cthe queers vs. the homosexuals.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In 2024,\u00a0he lamented\u00a0that\u00a0the growing letter train had become a\u00a0\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/andrewsullivan.substack.com\/p\/the-meaningless-incoherence-of-lgbtq-d47\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">meaningless incoherence<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0And this was before\u00a0everyone laughed at\u00a0Canadian Parliamentarian Leah Gazan\u00a0for expanding\u00a0it to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/mmiwg2slgbtqqia-meaning-canada-explained-11806539\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">MMIWG2SLGBTQQIA+<\/a>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The New York Times\u00a0gave\u00a0Sullivan\u00a0more\u00a0than\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2025\/06\/26\/opinion\/gay-lesbian-trans-rights.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">4,200 words<\/a>\u00a0to decry\u00a0\u201cHow the Gay Rights Movement Radicalized and Lost Its Way.\u201d\u00a0Lo and behold, he informs us the\u00a0claim that\u00a0\u201ctrans women\u00a0are\u00a0women\u201d\u00a0was never discussed or voted on at any of their\u00a0\u201cmeetings.\u201d\u00a0It was just proclaimed as theological truth. He also smacked trans\u00a0American Civil Liberties Union\u00a0lawyer\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2025\/12\/12\/trans-lawyer-who-asked-scotus-to-redefine-sex-cant-produce-a-definition-when-asked\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Chase Strangio<\/a>\u00a0for saying\u00a0utterly dumb things\u00a0like\u00a0\u201ca penis is not a male body part.\u00a0It\u2019s\u00a0just an unusual body part for a woman,\u201d\u202fand\u00a0\u201cThere [is] no such thing as a\u00a0\u2018male\u00a0body.\u2019\u201d Last\u00a0week, Sullivan took to his Substack to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/andrewsullivan.substack.com\/p\/the-tq-threat-to-lgb-rights-f02\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">inform the world<\/a> that \u201cTQ+\u201d\u00a0is\u00a0a\u00a0growing\u00a0\u201cthreat to LGB rights.\u201d\u00a0Homophobes\u00a0can breathe\u00a0easy\u00a0now. We\u00a0are no longer\u00a0the\u00a0whipping\u00a0boys.\u00a0Stunningly,\u00a0he\u00a0blames the\u00a0TQ+ers\u00a0for\u00a0\u201cthe return to the narrative of gays as queers, freaks, and child-obsessed is dangerous.\u201d\u00a0He\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/andrewsullivan.substack.com\/p\/strangio-things-ab3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">believes<\/a>\u00a0TQ\u00a0\u201ccould be the beginning of the end\u201d\u00a0for the rainbow movement because they\u00a0seek\u00a0to abolish the sex binary.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But Sullivan and his friends achieved that very thing in their June 2015 crowning victory:\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.oyez.org\/cases\/2014\/14-556\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><em>Obergefell v. Hodges<\/em><\/a>. If male and female are no longer essential for marriage, family, and parentage,\u00a0they no longer exist in any practical way in law, society,\u00a0and culture.\u00a0\u00a0This is precisely what happens when a man can simply displace a child\u2019s natural mother because the adults\u00a0desire\u00a0it. This is precisely what\u00a0<em>Obergefell\u00a0<\/em>did. It\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0just\u00a0redefine\u00a0marriage\u00a0and parentage. It pretended to redefine nature.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sullivan is right that his movement is ridiculous, but he\u00a0gets the timing wrong. It\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0become\u00a0crazy\u00a0because gay and lesbian\u00a0immigration\u00a0agents\u00a0failed to\u00a0maintain\u00a0a secure border on their precious movement, keeping out the undesirable trans and queers. Sullivan\u00a0fails to\u00a0appreciate that when you set yourself\u00a0to\u00a0toppling natural, universal\u00a0sexual\u00a0norms, you open yourself up to lots of wild things. Many of us warned of this, but people like Sullivan and his colleagues derided us\u00a0as\u00a0slippery\u00a0slopers.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sullivan is now confessing that the slope is greasier and nastier than\u00a0he\u2019s\u00a0comfortable with. In 1989, Sullivan was one of the first to make a serious case for gay\u00a0\u201cmarriage\u201d\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/newrepublic.com\/article\/79054\/here-comes-the-groom\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">in the pages<\/a>\u00a0of\u00a0The New Republic. It was subtitled,\u00a0\u201cA (conservative) case for gay marriage.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But there was and is nothing\u00a0conservative\u00a0about the idea of de-sexing marriage\u00a0and\u00a0dethroning\u00a0it of its essential\u00a0function.\u00a0It\u00a0always was\u00a0a radical and revolutionary idea. Sullivan admitted\u00a0in his\u00a0early article,\u00a0\u201cMuch of the gay leadership clings to notions of gay life as essentially outsider, anti-bourgeois, radical.\u201d\u00a0He falsely hoped linking\u00a0\u201cgay\u201d\u00a0and\u00a0\u201cmarriage\u201d\u00a0would temper the former and improve the latter.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo be gay and to be bourgeois no longer seems such an absurd proposition,\u201d\u00a0he\u00a0claimed. He hoped gaining marriage would make the gay relationship\u00a0\u201cclear and dignified.\u201d\u00a0Instead, this is the ever-expanding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/reel\/871142339210967\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">spectacle<\/a> that is\u00a0gay\u00a0\u201cmarriage\u201d\u00a0in\u00a02026.<\/p>\n<p>Sullivan can be as outraged about this ridiculous display as anyone, but\u00a0his ideas certainly\u00a0helped create\u00a0it.\u00a0Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy created this when he asserted that\u00a0\u201c[t]he Constitution grants them that right\u201d\u00a0in his\u00a0razorthin <em>Obergefell\u00a0<\/em>majority decision\u00a016\u00a0years ago.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Kennedy blindly\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/supreme.justia.com\/cases\/federal\/us\/576\/644\/#tab-opinion-3427255:~:text=There%2520is%2520no%2520difference%2520between%2520same%252D%2520and%2520opposite%252Dsex%2520couples%2520with%2520respect%2520to%2520this%2520principle.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">confessed<\/a>\u00a0he could conceive of\u00a0\u201cno difference between same- and opposite-sex couples with respect to this principle\u201d\u00a0of marriage\u2019s essential role in the social order.\u00a0No difference?\u00a0Really?\u00a0He dreamed,\u00a0\u201cSame-sex couples, too, may aspire to the transcendent purposes of marriage and seek fulfillment in its highest meaning.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Of course they cannot.\u00a0They are categorically\u00a0very different\u00a0things, having chosen to intentionally exclude the human binary of male or female in their choices.\u00a0Two men are\u00a0not the same as\u00a0a man and a woman because men and women are different.\u00a0This fabulist hairdressing Texas couple, among many others,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/photo.php?fbid=10117603637650927&#038;set=pb.9636095.-2207520000&#038;type=3\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">vividly demonstrates<\/a>\u00a0how\u00a0excluding\u00a0the human binary robs\u00a0small children of their mothers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Make no\u00a0mistake:\u00a0The\u00a0G created the very spectacle\u00a0Sullivan\u00a0has been going on and on about.\u00a0The T and Q have just kept pulling\u00a0the\u00a0string of gender devolution in new ways.\u00a0All the letters must accept the blame for the resulting madness\u00a0that comes from the proposition all the alphabet movement\u2019s letters\u00a0share:\u00a0that men and women are interchangeable everywhere.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Unlike Sullivan and many others like him, celebrated gay writer\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.out.com\/out-exclusives\/out100-2012\/2012\/10\/31\/michelangelo-signorile\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Michelangelo Signorile<\/a>\u00a0was all too honest about the radical nature of the gay marriage proposal. In 1996, he wrote in\u202fOUT\u202fmagazine:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe trick is, gay leaders and pundits must stop watering the issue down\u00a0\u2013 \u2018his is simply about equality for gay couples\u2019\u00a0\u2013\u00a0and offer same-sex marriage for what it is:\u00a0\u2026a chance to wholly transform the definition of family in American culture.\u00a0\u2026Our gay leaders must acknowledge that gay marriage is just as\u202fradical\u202fand\u202ftransformative\u202fas the religious\u00a0right contends it is.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Sullivan doesn\u2019t like that more people are vividly seeing LGBTQ\u2019s gender\u00a0radicalism\u00a0for what it\u2019s always been.\u00a0Expect to see more declining support for the\u00a0rainbow project.\u00a0<\/p>\n<hr>\n<p>   Glenn T.
