Before Trump left the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/white-house\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"8767\">White House<\/a> in January 2021, the House passed an article of impeachment related to his alleged involvement in the Capitol riot on Jan. 6 that year. The efforts went nowhere because the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/senate\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"8765\">Senate<\/a> declined to convict him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In both instances, the House was controlled by Democrats. The lower chamber is now controlled by Republicans, who are trying to hold on to their narrow majority this election cycle.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">House Speaker <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/mike-johnson\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"7043\">Mike Johnson<\/a> (R-LA) appears to be open to the move, although the resolution likely won\u2019t see any progress until after the <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonexaminer.com\/tag\/midterm-elections\/\" type=\"post_tag\" id=\"308\">midterm elections<\/a>. Since it was filed, the resolution has gained 23 Republican co-sponsors.
