Chuck Grassley of Iowa warned in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.judiciary.senate.gov\/press\/rep\/releases\/grassley-sounds-the-alarm-on-democrats-intentions-to-pack-the-supreme-court\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">speech<\/a> on the Senate floor Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>The speech responded to recent plans by Democrats to increase the number of Supreme Court Justices from nine to 13, which Grassley called out as wanting to add \u201cnew activist justices who will rule the way that they want, not the way the Constitution commands.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Grassley\u2019s floor speech came on the heels of various calls by Democrats to pack the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>The Democrats openly revealed their court packing plan with the Judiciary Act of 2021, which aimed to expand the number of Supreme Court seats from nine to 13. Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., chair of the House Judiciary Committee at the time, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2021\/04\/15\/987723528\/democrats-unveil-long-shot-plan-to-expand-size-of-supreme-court-from-9-to-13\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claimed<\/a>, \u201cWe are not packing the Supreme Court, we are unpacking it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Democrats renewed their court-packing threats in April this year after \u201cthe high court handed down a ruling in\u00a0<em>Louisiana v. Callais<\/em>\u00a0on Wednesday that nuked states\u2019 ability to use race in the redistricting process,\u201d The Federalist <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/05\/01\/dems-revive-court-packing-threats-after-being-told-they-cant-do-racist-gerrymandering\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a>. House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries expressed willingness to embrace court-packing once back in control of Congress, saying, \u201ceverything is on the table \u2014 everything \u2014 to deal with this corrupt MAGA majority.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Former Democrat presidential nominee Kamala Harris also helped to reignite the left\u2019s desire to pack the Supreme Court after she suggested it on a podcast with leftist advocacy group \u201cWin With Black Women\u201d last month. Only days later, a House Judiciary subcommittee held a <a href=\"https:\/\/constitutioncenter.org\/blog\/idea-of-changing-the-number-of-supreme-court-justices-is-hardly-new\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">hearing<\/a> on Supreme Court court-packing. Rep. Jamie Raskin, D-Md., claimed that the Supreme Court ought to have 13 justices because there are 13 federal circuits.<\/p>\n<p>Grassley believes the true reason why Democrats want to increase the number of justices is the same as always: \u201c[House Democrats]\u00a0aren\u2019t\u00a0upset about judicial ethics or institutional integrity.\u00a0 They\u2019re\u00a0upset because the Supreme Court is doing its job\u00a0\u2013\u00a0applying the Constitution as written rather than applying it as House Democrats wish it\u00a0was\u00a0written.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Grassley pointed to the left\u2019s shouts for new justices, but under a Democratic president, as proof of their desire to hijack the Supreme Court to serve their whims. \u201cFour new\u00a0justices are the exact amount they think they need to secure a liberal majority on the Court,\u201d he said, \u201c\u2026 [but] the fact that House Democrats\u00a0aren\u2019t\u00a0calling for new\u00a0justices today [under Trump] tells you everything you need to know about their motive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Activists who value the legitimacy of the Supreme Court are working to put an end to Democrats\u2019 court packing threats once and for all. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.keepnineonthesupremecourt.org\/how-keep-nine-started\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Keep Nine<\/a> Coalition, established in 2017 and comprised of both Democrat and Republican former elected officials, has spearheaded the effort to make expanding the court unconstitutional. They are one of the groups behind a constitutional amendment that would cap the number of Supreme Court justices at nine. The amendment <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/06\/03\/not-a-single-house-judiciary-dem-supports-amendment-keeping-scotus-at-9-justices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">passed<\/a> a House subcommittee vote last week \u2014 although not a single Democrat on the committee supported it \u2014 and is on its way to the House floor.<\/p>\n<p>As Grassley stated in his speech, expanding the number of justices \u201cmight make sense if the Supreme Court\u00a0hadn\u2019t\u00a0operated\u00a0with\u00a0nine\u00a0Justices since 1869\u00a0\u2013\u00a0for over 150 years!\u00a0And it also might make sense if we\u00a0hadn\u2019t\u00a0had 10 federal circuits since all the way back in 1929\u00a0\u2013\u00a0nearly 100\u00a0years ago!\u201d\u00a0He added, \u201cAdditional circuits haven\u2019t\u00a0been a reason to add\u00a0justices for\u00a0nearly a\u00a0century. It still\u00a0isn\u2019t\u00a0today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Democrats\u2019 calls to pack the Supreme Court are further proof that they will stop at nothing to smear the conservative justices seeking to uphold the Constitution. Their intimidation tactics are nothing new, either. Democratic leader Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., publicly <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2020\/03\/06\/stop-blaming-kavanaugh-for-schumers-scotus-threats\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">threatened <\/a>Supreme Court Justices\u00a0Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch in 2020. At a pro-abortion rally, Schumer said if the did not bend to his pro-abortion agenda and produce rulings accordingly, \u201cyou will pay the price,\u201d and \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.rev.com\/blog\/transcripts\/chuck-schumer-pro-abortion-rally-speech-transcript-says-kavanaugh-gorsuch-will-pay-the-price\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">you won\u2019t know what hit you<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Such rhetoric laid the groundwork for violence and threats against justices. Not long after Schumer made his speech about the <em>Dobbs<\/em> decision, a crazed attempted assassin, Nicholas Roske, decided Kavanaugh deserved to die because of a leaked draft opinion that suggested the Supreme Court intended to overrule <em>Roe v. Wade<\/em>. Roske believed that killing a conservative justice would change the court\u2019s opinions for \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/justice-brett-kavanaugh-assassination-nicholas-roske-3262cca6bdb7c90ada407fbd8944ff7d\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">decades to come<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>More recently, Sen. Raphael Warnock\u2019s, D-Ga., <a href=\"https:\/\/thefederalist.com\/2026\/06\/10\/warnocks-violence-smears-against-scotus-invite-more-leftist-attacks-on-its-justices\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">claimed<\/a> on June 6 that the <em>Callais <\/em>majority rule against racist redistricting \u201ccommitt[ed] violence against the ways in which ordinary people can have a voice in our system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Democrats claim America is falling apart and the only way to fix it is to break the rules, it shows one simple truth: \u201cHouse Democrats can\u2019t get their preferred outcomes through the democratic process, [so] they want to rig the Supreme Court to ensure they never lose,\u201d Grassley said, but thankfully, for now, \u201cthat\u2019s not how our democracy works.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Democrats\u2019 plan to undermine the legitimacy of the Supreme Court by filling it with left-wing ideologues is a \u201cdirect threat,\u201d Sen.
